Using Data-Linking to move workflow
« on: June 08, 2016, 06:33:40 pm »
Hi all,

I've done a quick search on the forums and don't believe this question has been raised previously (apologies if it has).

I know that most diagram solutions have the ability to update values in a diagram if you link the values to data in a form such as an excel sheet. But what I want to find out is whether Sparx could be a solution to my problem of allowing me to change where a value is placed in my design by amending their location value in the data.

Ie imagine I have a diagram that shows a flow as below....
Initial Instruction>>>>>AutomaticInputtingAPIService>>>>>DatabaseX
In this scenario the AIAPIService may sit on Server'A' and thus the diagram shows in a straight line.

But if I was to go into my data form and state the the AIAPIService has been relocated to Server'B'. Could my design in visio automatically update to move the AIAPIService to no longer be found under Server'A' and have moved to Server'B' and as a result, the workflow connections (ie arrows) would re-route to 'Server'B aswell.

(Hope this makes sense!)

Tony,

You do realize that you are on the EA forum, and not the Visio forum?
I doubt you'll get much useful feedback for a Visio problem.

Apologies Geert,

In my haste, I copied and pasted the same wording I have put on other forums. Effectively I am looking for any diagram design software that could provide that solution. Hopefully someone can help (even if it isn't of benefit to Sparx).

Tony,

EA is not a diagramming tool, but a modeling tool.
As such is is meant to be the source of information, so you don't need to maintain another data source such as an excel.

So effectively, if you move the element from one server to the other in the model, this change will be automatically reflected in any diagrams that show the impacted elements.
