[Forum] how notify spam
« on: July 10, 2016, 05:41:32 pm »
I've just read a post that's spam:

http://sparxsystems.com/forums/smf/index.php/topic,31126.0.html

How is it possible to notify when a post is a spam or, more in general, offensive and so on?

Look at the bottom right of each post. There a "report to moderator" link.

(FWIW I already reported that one as spam)

That's not needed. Spammer appear increasingly over the weekend when there's no moderator. They are cleaned the next Monday. Just ignore them.

Thanks to both of you. I'll ignore it at the moment.

The SPAM has been deleted and, as per normal practice, the user ID and ISP address banned.
Best Regards, Roy

Well, as per normal practice spammers seem to be able to create new posts every minute at least. I guess there's a full time job responsible for removing that spam. How about fixing the leak instead to get rd of those intruders? (Well, it's more a rhetorical question.)

q.

P.S. right now there are 3 identical spam addresses from 3 different users on the general board on top
P.P.S. Yes, I just click it away. But what kind of impression do people have from a forum that looks like this?

It seems to be getting worse the last few weeks.
I do hope someone @Sparx gets so fed up with it they search for a real solution soon.

I've seen in other places that the forum attacking scripts have become much more powerful.

Quite obviously the new user access routine is broken now. Seems like they use AI against AI :-/

@Moderators: would you encourage us users to hit the "notify" button (like Geert did) or would you agree qwerty's assumption of "they are cleaned next monday"?

Thanks any idea which user's help would it make easier for you to get rid of it, Shegit

As I'm in the earliest time zone I generally report spam.  Since we have been getting enough of it for an admin to have to clean it daily I have only been reporting spam in side non-spam threads that they may not notice.

Thanks.

The ones with a URL in the subject line are easy to deal with: Ban IP address, remove post and repeat. Notifying those posts isn't useful. But notifying posts that aren't immediately obvious as spam is appreciated. The tricky ones are where they revive a thread that's about a month old, run a previous reply through a thesaurus and post that, and include spam links in their sigs. At first glance, the post looks like a genuine contribution to the thread, but the links give them away.

Anyway, I'm a moderator not an admin, so I have no ideas what other steps are available, if any. Maybe if I ban my own IP address, the problem will go away. For me, at least  :)
