Stop SPAM
« on: August 12, 2016, 10:38:39 pm »
Any chance to get a button that allows to move threads to a spam folder which is only visible to an operator who can then either delete it or talk to the person moving the thread? Available to long-term members only. Or a mechanism like on SO where 5 people can vote for being spam and then the thread gets deleted?

Yeah, pretty annoying if you get notified about all new threads in the forum.

@Sparxians: Please include captchas for submitting topics/replies as every forum does it nowadays!

Actually no, the cure would be worse than the disease.

That's what the report to moderator link is for.

Agreed, but the last weekend a couple of (or just one schizoid?) spammer(s) went crazy and no mod was around. Would be nice to have limited mod-rights for users. Just dreaming.

Since this has been brought back up again...

A captcha is a bad way to stop spam. These days any captcha that is strong enough to defeat any but the most basic spammers will be hard for a significant portion of the population. Besides that, as I understand it we have had that as a requirement for the first n posts since migrating to this platform. There was also other spam protection in place that looked for more subtle signs that it wasn't a human at a web browser. (Things like unusual http headers)

The sudden influx of spam that we experienced a couple of weeks ago appeared to be because of a sudden improvement to whatever scripts they were using. We added some new spam protection (heuristic based) that stopped the spam completely for a while. In the last couple of days I have noticed a couple of spam posts. I'm just hoping it doesn't get out of control any time soon.

Most of them are horrible for dyslexics too.  When you are used to letters rotating then you're more likely to be more generous in deciding that shapes in the captcha are actually letters you should enter.

But really the only place that the captcha needs to be is on the new user form, to stop scripts creating users.
