Author Topic: Cannot connect to EA Work items with MDG 4.5 Beta (Read 7628 times)

Hi,

I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and EA 7.5. I've installed the MDG Link and MDG Integration packages in an attempt to link EA and Team Foundation Server.

I can get the source control all linked up nicely and can view/edit the EA items in the EA Project Browser. However, when I try to look at the EA Work Items I get an empty view with only the 'Connect' button visible. When I click on this either nothing happens or I get the screen to allow me to choose the TFS sever. When I get the screen to choose the TFS server it does not have anything in the project drop down. Note that I can connect to the TFS server fine via Team Explorer.

One long shot may be that I only want to use EA from a BA point of view so I don't need access to the source code. However, you seem to need to add the EA project to a .sln file to get it in the Solution Exporer. Whenever I click on the .sln file in TFS an error message pops up saying I don't have the right application to load the .sln file but it still lets me add the EA project to the file anyway. It's from this that I then access the EA project.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm a bit confused, what are you trying to achieve, a link with Visual Studio, or integrate TFS version control in EA?
In the latter case you don't need the MDG stuff, you just need to setup version control in EA.

Apologies, I wasn't very clear.

I want to set up both version control and a link with Visual Studio. I've had success with the version control so I don't need any other help with that.

I am struggling to link EA with work items. The EA Work Items tab just remains empty and I can't seem to connect to the TFS server.

Just to add, whenever I'm in the EA Project browser and choose one of the Team Foundation Server contect menu options I get the following:

"TFS Not Connected"
"You must be connected to TFS before using this function"

Sorry, can't help you then. I've only had experience with setting up TFS as version control, not with the MDG integration.
Have you asked Sparx support?

Will do. No response yet...

After further investigation internally, it may be to do with how we store the projects in TFS. They are stored in collections but the dialog to link to a project in the MDG plugin doesn't seem to have this extra layer.

Is there any other way to store projects in TFS2010 besides in collections? My impression is that ALL TFS projects have to belong to a collection, right?

If thats the case it sounds like the MDG TFS integration is not 2010 compatable.

I must admit, I've only used 2010 and the projects were already set up before I got involved. The collection thing may be just a red herring...

I've had a response from support and they asked me to run a file called dbgview and send them the log. There was one item in the log that looks suspicious:

"Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. "

Any idea what that is all about?

It looks like I don't have the assembly file C:\windows\assembly\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell installed on my machine. Does anyone know how I can get this on there? Someone at work thinks it may be to do with .NET frameworks. I've got .NET Frameworks 2.0 (SP2), 3.0 (SP2), 3.5 (SP1) and 4 (Client Profile, Extended and Multi-Targeting Pack).

I managed to resolve the issue reported in the log but the plugin still wouldn't work. A few weeks later the support team has just got back to me with:

"We have confirmed that this is an issue and it should be fixed at some point in the future."

At least I wasn't doing something stupid. I'll repost here if/when the fix arrives.
