Visualizing the overall process tree
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:52:26 pm »
Hello,

This might be the stupidest question, however as a EA novice  I  am wasting a lot of time investigating so I might as well ask it :

Is there any way to view the entire process model in one diagram hierarchically from the topmost diagram down to level 4 diagram, basically the overall process tree ?
I have several diagrams from level 0 ->level 4 containing only  Business processes (+composite structure), events, actors, roles, connectors, principles, assessments, systems describing a process and I would like to be able to see the overall picture of the process without opening every single diagram.

Many thanks in advance!

You need to create the wall paper yourself. You can do so by dragging the various diagrams on a single (or multiple) new overview diagrams. I did so in the past. Doing that automatically would be a nightmare for the person to implement it. And another one for those to view the result. Be assured that this can only be assembled by a human.

And probably a human with some artistic capabilities (therefore making it "up hill" for me... :) )

One of my aphorisms is:  "A picture is worth a thousand words - until there are more than 6 boxes or twelve lines...  Then all bets are off!"

Perhaps you could generate a Diagrams Only report on the whole model, or the appropriate chunk of it? You won't get all the business process flow on one diagram, but you will have all the diagrams printed in one place without having - as you say - to go and open each diagram separately. You will have to make sure that your labeling and cross referencing are clear, so that you can easily follow the direct flow and the expansion into detail from diagram to diagram.

Personally, I can find loads of arguments against the validity of 'a picture is worth a thousand words', but change 'picture' to 'diagram' and I can at least (unlike Paolo) concede that complex diagrams are more self-explanatory than simple ones.
