Pro Cloud Server versus SPARX Cloud Service
« on: May 24, 2017, 12:25:50 am »
Hi Everyone,
This may sound like a stupid question, but I would like to understand the difference between the Cloud Service you install in premise to simplify your connections, and this new Pro Cloud Server?

I am currently using the Cloud Service version in my local server with MySQL backend, and I would like to understand the difference so I can analyze the advantage/disadvantage to moving to this new Pro Cloud Server.

In addition, Can I use this new WebEA with my current  Cloud Service?

Thank you and I really appreciate your help.

Faisal

My simple understanding is that the cloud services provides a http/s connection to the database whereas the pro cloud server is providing a web application presentation layer in PHP so that folks can see the model without the need to install Sparx EA.
There is a tech overview diagram that might help visualise how these fit together.

Hope that helps  :)
Happy to help

Intersting that those "architectures" are still presented in Power(?)Point format. The PDF "Brochure" just cries "Total Integration". Why does that just recall two things, namely "Total Recall" (Schwarzenegger) and Total War (Göbbels; another Austrians fellow)?

Just kidding...

The pro-cloud server is a drop in replacement for the existing cloud service as far as usage from Enterprise Architect.

It also provides an OSLC interface not previously available. This interface is used by WebEA to show a live view of your model, but is also available for other potential tools.

PS. There's enough on the architecture diagram (and more on the technology overview) to recognize them as being drawn by EA, although with liberal use of alternate images. It is for marketing, so it's appropriate for the audience.

Yes. It's definitely not a Sparxian sickness. Just as Henry Ford said: 50% of the marketing money is just useless. But you don't know which half.

Hello Simon,

If you are replacing the existing Cloud Service with this new Cloud Server, are you saying that you will be discontinuing the Cloud Service? and we will be forced to use the cloud server? I am currently using the cloud service without paying anything. Does that mean that I will have to pay for this service in the future since I have to switch to this new Cloud Server?

Please let me know.
Thanks,
Faisal

My understanding is that the existing cloud server functionality will still be supported as a free/lite version.

Unfortunately, we haven't released an updated version of that edition yet. (ie. Bug fixes)

Hi Spaxians,
will there also come a Pro Cloud Server license variant that can be bought rather than paying a yearly fee?
Best regards,

Hi Simon,

The current cloud service is so buggy that is almost not usable, and since it is losing connection all the time, it starting to corrupt the model, and I constantly getting an error saying duplicate primary key, even though they are new elements. I am going to go back to the ODBC connection instead.
This current cloud service is way too risky to implement in a small organization with over 10+ architects.

You should get an updated version very soon.

Have you sent in a bug report detailing your problems? They don't sound familiar to me. I know it is being used successfully in both larger and smaller situations than that.

What database backend are you using?
What version of Enterprise Architect?
What version of the cloud server?
