Excel Import
« on: April 25, 2018, 01:41:46 am »
Hello there,
I'm new to EA. I need to create ~200 class in a package, and I've got class names listed in a spreadsheet. I'm wondering if there's a simple and quick way to import names as classes into my model.

Thanks
Evandro

From the context menu of a package choose Import/CSV. That should get your classes into EA.

Hi,

Following steps are useful:

1. SHIFT+right-click on background of a target Class diagram and select 'Create Multiple Elements...'
2. select all cells which contain names in the spreadsheet and press Ctrl+C (i.e. copy to clipboard)
3. right-click the Name cell in the Create Multiple Elements dialog of Enterprise Architect, and select 'Import name from clipboard'

Hi all,

All you may already know, there is another useful operation to create an element.

1. open a target diagram in EA
2. select any text in MS Word, Powerpoint, or other tools which support drag'n'drop texts.
3. drag the selected text and drop onto the EA diagram
4. select element type - the dropped text will be the name of the element. If you drag two or more lines, the first line will be the name of the element and all other lines will be its Note.

Do you know this?

HTH,

To save one more keystroke  ;), in step 1 you can also use the space bar instead of SHIFT+right-click...

Thanks Evandro for the question, I was searching for the same answer.

@Takeshi K., great tips (both) and thanks for sharing!

BTW, after the importing the list (e.g. requirements) how do you share modeled results with team? (any integration tool? do you publish every update?) What do work that best from your experience?

Thanks,
TZ

Hello TZ,

When you say publish? Do you want to share the model for getting review comments or just for review?

They are mulitple ways to do it.

As Takeshi mentioned model sharing via Pro Cloud Server or Prolaborate are more effective for model discussion.

To publish the model with team the you can also try EA HTML report. With the help of scheduler we can even automate this process

You can also generate a document using the document generation templates.

Or you can use a proper database to store your model and have your team members use EA to consult the model.
There is even a free Lite edition that gives read-only access to a model.

Thanks all for your for responses!
I definitely use "Generate Documentation" and "HTML report", but was wondering about other approaches (if any). I assume that all were described.

Will try the cloud-base approach described by Takeshi K. and the ones by Geert.

@Nabil, sorry for being unclear. Correct, the idea to share model(s) for review/collaboration with team and collecting feedback. Many thanks for sharing automation tip (EA HTML report) - will play with this later.
