Wii System Menu Updates?

When I update my wii system menu, what actually gets updated? Is there anything important which game relies on??

Update: Sparx - What's homebrew and what would other hacks be?

The reason i'm asking this question is because my USB ports are messed up at the back because I had my keyboard connected and when I took it out, it was stuck. When i forced it out, the back chasis chasis cracked and now my USB LAN thingy doesn't work anymore. Any help?
Update 2: Both USB ports are messed up now :-(
