New Request: Connectivity to Data Modeling Softwar
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:05:03 am »
Would it be possible to ceate a connector or add-in to popular data modeling software such as Erwin and ER Studio?  We have numerous Erwin data models already built that show more information than would be available by reverse enginerring a database.  It would be useful to connect to these models and either import the metadata into EA or link to them from EA. Sure. As long as Erwin provides some API you can create an add-in to connect both. This can be an open-end task...

I know Erwin just by its name and never dealt with it. But probably you can create an XMI export from Erwin so you have your reference data model ready to be VC-synched in EA. Or do your data modelers base on a domain model developed in EA?

I believe ERWin has some XMI export capability.

See the CA 'Metadata Integration Bridge' for explicit exporting to XMI for Enterprise Architect:
http://erwin.com/integrations/
ER/Studio I am not aware of XMI support.

Both CA ERwin and Embarcadero ER/Studio support XMI export.  However, subsequent import attempts to the same package create duplicates rather than updating the objects that were created during the first import, even when specifying that the unique ID's should be used during the XMI bridging.

I would appreciate hearing if anyone has had any success in getting refreshes and/or round trip engineering to work successfully.
