For various reasons I can;t install Firebird and its server/guardian components.  So I can't connect to my feap model file (in my own hard disk) using the DBeaver Firebird driver.  But I should be able to connect via OBDC.  Don't know how to set it up, and that OBDC driver to use (the one provided by Firebird I guess???).  I will ask in DBeaver forums but of anyone has experience with EA, please share OBDC driver info and setup procedure!  Thanks!!!

Hmm. I was using DBeaver without issue on a local feap.

Yes it's just that I can't install Firebird database and its server and guardian service on my PC, so I figured OBDC would be the way to go

It is very likely that you will need to install an ODBC driver specifically for this and, to do this, you need some admin rights on the machine.

I think qwerty was saying this in one of his replies.

Yes. I'm still shaking my head about stupid things in this world. And companies setting up admin rules as if all users were idiots or bad hackers and would bring just evil. Thinking that live would be so easy without users. Something that not only applies to admins....

To be fair & full disclosure... it's my personal choice not to install servers in my office machine, I could do it if I wanted to and I would if the benefit of using DBeaver outweighted the (real or perceived) hassle/system resources/security concern for Windows 10 (which is already bad as it is)
So my bias is to use OBDC when I can.
I don't have a huge benefit in using DBeaver so I'm vacillating at installing Firefox AND the server AND the guardian service just for a slightly better query frontend to *feap files.

/end rant

No offense (as always in my case ;-)

I think you must not limit yourself too much. An ODBC driver can bear as many issues as something called server. You probably must not take that too heavy (without having looked into the code, but Firefox has much trust from my side). Running a more solid DB than MS Access pretends to be probably needs some kind of server process (an ODBC can span servers under the hood as well). MS Access is for quick development of GUIs that can also hold data retrievable via something like SQL. Using it as kind of SQL server is just something that should not happen. When EA had been developed the number of alternatives was probably a bit limited. However, still sticking to those antiques is nothing I'd praise.

Just my point of view. I don't want to convince you of anything.

Thanks qwerty... none taken.  And much food for thought in your last reply, thank you and I'll look into it... cheers!

Is your choice of Firebird a constrain imposed by your client/employer or a personal preference?

I run a setup in one of the 2 office laptops I use that minimises the amount of server software I need to run. Happy to share that.

Thanks qwerty, I miss it

My suggestion for Richard is to consider other easier configurations: 1) MS Access, 2) SQL Server Developer Edition,  or 3) PostGreSQL.

Well, not long ago he discovered FEAP for himself (there's a thread) and indeed it's the better choice compared to MS Access. I'd use it, but the contractor I'm currently working for has the admin madness to forbid everything. So bound to Access :-(
