As the title says, If I have a particular diagram type defined in an MDG, do I need to also have an instance in the Templates package?  If NOT, can I provide ALL the properties via the MDG that I can with the Templates package (for example, use of a specific background tile)?  If SO, why?  (Not criticising - just curious as to the Use Case).

I'm pretty sure there are still a number of defaults you can't set on in the MDG
Default notes is one thing, but I'm sure there are lots of others

Yes, Geert,

That's my worry...

Hopefully, a Sparaxian will provide a definitive answer.   (we live in hope ;) )
