No Addins in EAlite?
« on: June 21, 2023, 04:00:13 pm »
Hello,
just installed the latest EAlite (16.1.1626 - 32 bit) replacing the previously installed full EA and checked the availability of the earlier installed Addins using the Manage Addins button.
After a long time the Manage Addins dialog opens showing the Addins as Enabled and Load on Startup checked.
But none of the Addins is shown on the toolbar and also no Specialize context menu is available.
Does this mean that EAlite doesn't support Addins?
Then why the Manage Addins button is there?
Can somebody explain this?
Thanks for your help!

Michael

Yes, Add-Ins - especially add-ins that write to the DB are disabled in EALite.  Leaving the Manage AddIns button is just what we call EAUI (EA's Unique Interface).  It makes sense on planet Sparx but not here.

What a pity  :(
There are a lot of 3rd party addins not modifying the DB which add functionality to EA.
So people not modifying the model still have to use the (licensed!) EA just to be able to use an addin.
To me it looks like a commercial decision of Sparx Systems...

Well, of course. For quite a moment they even ceased to publish EALite - until people got too angry about that.

It's a restriction about what an add-in can do. Because an add-in could be used to circumvent some of the restrictions that EA Lite has, (particularly things like document generation) an add-in can't show a user interface.

There are also add-ins that distribute MDG technologies. EA Lite does support add-ins with passive functionality like that.

Of course it's a commercial decision. EA Lite is not charity on our part, it's a commercial decision to add value to the licensed version of Enterprise Architect.
