Communication vs. Collaboration
« on: May 03, 2005, 12:02:02 pm »

Hi

Is it true that collaboration diagrams have been renamed communication is UML 2.0 spec? If so where can I find information about why and what changes have been specified.

Thanks
Priya

I just checked the UML 2.0 spec and it does mention the Collaboration as a collection of roles. And does not mention anything about a merge with Communication and yet many sites report that Collaboration and communication are the same.  Any idea why?

Thanks
Priya

From what I've read, it seems that UML 2.0 communication diagrams = UML 1.x collaboration diagrams, while UML 2.0 collaboration diagrams = UML 1.x collaboration diagrams without messages, plunked inside a collaboration oval. UML 2.0 collaboration diagrams show the roles played by objects in a collaboration with their types & connections, then links them explicitly to a collaboration. Take away the collaboration oval, add messages and sequence numbers and, voila! UML 2.0 communication diagram.
