Reusing Elements
« on: July 17, 2007, 05:39:31 am »
Hello
Sorry if this is obvious...

I tend to package up Activity Diagrams and all their elements together so I can organise them and print out RTF docs easliy.

If I want to re-use a common element from AD1 on AD2, I can drag 'n drop the element from Package AD1 onto the AD2 diagram (And it references back to AD1) but when I generate the RTF, the common element (and its notes etc.) is not documented.

Is there a properties switch to force it to be documented?

There is an option someplace on the RTF dialog that determines whether to document linked (i.e. from another package) elements. By default it is off, I believe).

I've not done this for a while, so the actual name might be a bit different. Look around for it.

Thers is a 'Document each contained element in RTF' option which I tried but that did not seem to work...was that the one?

No, Guy,

That's not it. The option I'm thinking of has something to do with covering elements that are not 'descendants' of the package you are documenting (i.e. not in the ownership tree of the top package of your document).

I think this is found from the "Switch Generator" dialog. It is called something like Document All Elements, or Include Linked Elements. If memory serves it is a check box on the lower right of the dialog.

Note that this might invoke the 'other' RTF generator. That is, if you were expecting to use one of EA's RTF generation methods (there are two, one of which dates back to the 4.0 days) invoking this dialog might switch methods. You'll have to experiment and see if it works for you.

Yes the legacy version is better and incldues the linked elements but is there away to get the other "More advanced template editor" Genrator to add these missing pieces in..as we use standard templates for these
Thanks
