Desfray Provides these definitions (which I've paraphrased just a bit):
  • External - Client requirements with regard to an organization's services.  In UML speak:  the functional requirements identified in the Use Case Model.
  • Internal - Such as quality, legal, and traceability constraints.  Generally these requirements are imposed by a developer's Project Manager and/or Technology Management.
  • Non-functional - client specified response time, availability, tolerated error rates, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by creating boundaries between them.

Verbal Use Cases aren't worth the paper they are written upon.

External requirement: The system shall do what ever I want it to do, whenever I want it to, no matter how I try to inform it of my desire.

Internal requirement: If you want to do this.. and this is supported by the system, then and only then, as long as YOU conform to the wants and needs of the system then and only then you will be accomodated.

Think about all the above.

Thanks sargasso,jeshaw2

I am sorry for the delay.

I got confused by the word External requirements. I thought it is external to the subsystem and hence I need to provide interfaces.

But in the HELP and documents it says the requirements from the business.

Arun

While we are at the requirements discussion...

Does anyone know how to find out who is referencing a given external requirement?
The requirement properties are missing the link tab!
So while I can trace the requirement from the use case we cannot go the other way.
In one case we only referenced the top level element from a requirement hierarchy - and cannot follow the links to the sub requirements (children) linked to it.

Is there a workaround?

You should see any references in the Relations window. I never had problems going this way.

Thanks for pointing this out to me.....

I am doing requirements again, but this time I am trying to use requirements like mindmaps ... so the relationships are essential.
