Creating a Sub-System under System in Archimate 2.
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:50:56 pm »
Hi All,

I have a system which has sub-systems. I am looking to create a view using Archimate 2 which can incorporate this system and its sub-subsystems in the same component. I did some research online and found that i can use 'Application Component' and 'Applicaiton Collaboration' for this purpose.

So basically i am looking to have my parent system as 'Application Component or Application Collaboration' and then add its sub-systems underneath them. Its Sub-Systems are 'Applicaition Components', 'Application Service' etc.

I am looking to get a suggestion on which approach i should use to show my system and sub-systems. Either i should use a 'Application Component' or 'Application Collaboration' or any other component?

Thanks.

A component is something physical (even "physical" software). A collaboration is a description of how it works. So you will need both.

My system is a 'physical software' which has few sub-systems under it. So how will i represent that in a diagram? How can i use both Application Component and Application Collaboration in my case?

Thanks.

I'm not an Archimate guru. Instead I was speaking from a general view (which likely applies). Somehow, I guess, you will need the Application Collaboration to gather sequence/activity diagrams and the like to show the system behavior. The components are more to show the structure. Maybe some Archimaters can ship in their knowledge.

I have to keep recommending this ebook:

Mastering Archimate by Gerben Wierda

It is the only in depth practical book on Archimate modeling that I have found.

Has also been recommended here by others. Gerben's work has somehow been adopted by the Archimate organization as a standards documentation.
