RTF Documentation Problem
« on: September 05, 2005, 08:31:58 am »
Hi all

I´m new to EA. I'm trying to personalize the Use Cases RTF Documentation, but I have a problem. I need to separate the Actors from the Use Cases in the final document. Can I do this?, I mean. Is there a way to separate this in the same document. I tried doing this in separates RTF templates, but I`m trying to do this in the same one.

Thanks and Regards

What about creating a separate Package "Actors". That's what I do.

I completely subscribe to the proposed solution of creating separate packages.
Apart form correct semantics (grouping), it has the distinct advantage of letting you assign a template totally adapted to the package contents and even 'auto-generate" that doc.

If you wanna put it all together: use Word. I find myself using Word for correct headers anayway, and it takes next to no time.

Hi, all. Thanks for the hints. I allready tried this, but I can´t have the results I need, I mean. I need the actors to be separated from the use cases, so I put the actors into a separate package, but the results were awfull. Is there a step I forget to do?.

Thanks in advance

Hard to tell until you let us know what you mean by "awful". Maybe you should give an example on how the output should look like.

Yes, it's true I didn´t explain this so much.

For an example, I put only one use case and one actor. I put the the actor into a separated child package and the use case into the root package and both elements into a diagram.

When I try to generate the RTF document from my own template, where I need the Actors to be first than the use cases, so I put the child package first and then the elements, but the actors are listed as use cases, first but the title I put is ignored.

Thanks in advance

Usually I put the Actors package aside. I have a structure like
...
- Project Definition
-- Requirements
-- Stakeholders (special Actors)
-- Project Organization
-- (etc. basic stuff)
- Use Case Model
-- Actors
-- UC Package 1
-- (etc all UC packages)
...
That will allow stepwise documentation. You can use the Actors in any diagram you like.

thanks thomaskilian

This was very informative. I did it this way and problem solved. Now, I wonder if is there possible to make separated Documents for each package and when you ask to generate the documents, EA automatically join all of them. Is this possible?

thanks again

I'd create separate documents and join them outside EA using Word (or something like that). There's also the possibility to make use of EA's Model Document feature (search "virtual documents" in EA's help).
