Hyperlink Address for diagrams flawed
« on: February 12, 2008, 11:20:26 pm »
The hyperlink process for Diagrams (at least) is flawed.

The Hyperlink address does not mirror the actual address of the diagram.

The actual link is managed internally by a GUID, so the address field for the Diagram hyperlink should be read only (and, perhaps, mirror the other internal links such as $Matrix and be rendered as $diagram //<name>)

The Notes field is used to display the text on the diagram.  Therefore for diagrams, there might be an additional check box: [  ] Track Name which would be updated when the diagram name changed.

A secondary check box: [  ] Suppress Package would suppress the package part of the name.

Yes, certainly.

But shouldn't that be the behavior in all cases? If you want to display specific text then just don't include a marker for the diagram name. If the marker is there, it should be updated. Surely that's not rocket science, since the GUID is available for the lookup.

David,

There's no marker for the diagram name in the Notes field (or have I missed something?).  We often use the Notes field to display narrative text and an injunction to "double click here to see more...".  So we don't always just have the diagram name.

Quite correct.

But if there is a possibility to track the name, there has to be some way for EA to know where to put it. This preserves the ability for us to provide a 'fixed' text string (i.e. not the diagram name, but something else to cue the reader).

So what I am saying is that there should be a specific indicator that the target name is to be inserted. If that indicator is given, the name should always be tracked. If you don't want the name tracked, then just insert a text string without the indicator. This could be handled in much the same way* as other substitution macros.
