VisioImporter issues
« on: July 04, 2008, 01:35:05 pm »
The best I can reconstruct it, this was the scenario: (1) installed VisioImporter.exe into EA7.1.828 on my XP SP3 earlier this year, (2) upgraded (1) to EA7.1.830 yesterday.  To the best of my recollection, I've done nothing else that would have caused the following:

(A) After (1) but before (2), I tried importing a .vsd file into EA and was presented with a "Server Busy" dialog box that appeared while EA was importing.  The only way I could unlock EA was to terminate it from the Windows Task Manager.  Information: My Visio has a VisioUMLAddon.vsl macro that causes a Visio security warning dialog popup each time I enter Visio, asking if I want to enable that macro.  I have to click on either "Enable Macros" of "Disable Macros" before Visio proceeds.  This Visio security dialog popup also appeared while EA was trying to import the .vsd file (before the "Server Busy" dialog box appears).  If I clicked on the Visio Disable/Enable button quickly enough, the "Server Busy" box didn't appear and EA completed the import.  My guess is that EA isn't dealing well with Visio waiting for my Disable/Enable click.

(B) After (2), I started having Visio issues, and trying to import a .vsd file into EA did nothing (nothing happened, though EA remained alive).  My Visio issues were: (a) Double clicking on a .vsd file from Windows Explorer resulted in multiple "Windows Installer" and "Installing Microsoft Office Visio" dialog boxes but no Visio. (b) Trying to open Visio from Start>All Programs>... resulted in the above multiple "Windows Installer" and "Installing Microsoft Office Visio" dialogs and a Visio execution error.  Double clicking on visio.exe from Windows Explorer worked successfully.

(C) I reconstructed my Explorer>Tools>Folder Options...>File Types>VSD entry to point to visio.exe.  Now, double clicking on a .vsd file will open Visio with that file, though the "Windows Installer" and "Installing Microsoft Office Visio" dialog boxes still appear (and vanish).  Using VisioImporter.exe is back to my having to hurriedly click on a Visio Disable/Enable button to avoid the "Server Busy" notice.

(D) I've noticed that EA now appears (may have also appeared before (2), not sure) on the Windows Explorer "Open With..." menu for .vsd files, though trying to open a .vsd file with EA from there results in an EA dialog box "An Error has Occurred: Unrecognized database format: 'C:/ ... .vsd'".

I've been with Visio for roughly ten years and am quite familiar with it both technically and as a user.  I've been using EA for roughly six months, and have had only one other (minor, see below) problem with it, beside the above.  I've been a UML'r since 2004.  I'm an experienced Business and Systems Architect.  I'm very technically experienced and careful when installing something that might disrupt my working environment.  I can recall nothing else I might have done to cause the above issues.

I suspect EA has stepped on something related to correlating the VSD extension with Visio (most likely caused during the upgrade to 830). Reinstalling Visio has done nothing to change the situation.  While not catastrophic, this certainly is (and I'd hope you'd agree) a pain.

The other (minor) issue is that I've had problems with the Help>Help Contents>Favorites pane loosing contents.  When I bookmark a page, close and reopen EA, I seem to (occasionally, not always) loose all references except the first one.  Information: At one time, I thought this was somehow Project dependent, but I think not.  When I end EA, I don't make an effort to first close the Help window.  Also, of course I've had to terminate EA from Task Manager several times, and this might have an effect...

Other than that, I don't have much to say.  Looking forward to your response(s).
