Bookmarks using master documents
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:53:03 pm »
I'm having a question concerning the use of bookmarks icw master documents.

If I generate a RTF document right clicking the master document element, The document contains bookmarks which represent locations in the document.
If I do the same thing but then generate from a model document, the all bookmarks represent selections.

The result of this is that I am only able to bookmark sections of documents generated from model document in an external Word document. If I use this bookmarking functionality from a master document, the field in the external Word document will stay empty becaus no text was selected by the bookmark.

I don't think this is meant this way.

How to reproduce:
1. Create a master document
2. Create a model document in the master document
3. Generate the document selecting the model document and pressing F8.
3. Open the generated document and check out the available bookmarks.
4. Now generate the document right clicking the master document and select "Documentation" -> "Rich text format (RTF) report".
5. Open the generated document again and check out the bookmarks now. You'll see that the bookmarks do not represent selections, but locations in the document.

Can anybody confirm this?

I have filed a bug a while ago which reported about empty bookmarks section in the RTF document when created from a master document.
However I have not received any answer to this bug and at least in 831 it is not fixed.

Make sure to include the corresponding sections from the RTF in both cases.
This usually helps Sparx a lot.

Got reply from Sparx. Seems understandable while you can make EA generate a package or element more then once in 1 document with the master document functionality. What bookmark would you want to give that element in the document? Twice the same bookmark is not possible.

Hello Marcel,

This is a feature not a bug  ;-)

With standard RTF reports generated there is a one-one association
between the Elements-details being generated and the elements in the
repository.  With Master Documents allowing multiple sub-documents, this
ceases to be 1:1. RTF Bookmarking requires that it is unique.  There is
no simple method that allows the generated data to be uniquely
identified directly in association with the original element. In some
ways the Master Document design is more to override the need to use
Bookmarking.

If you still need Bookmarking - we do suggest you stick to the standard
template formatting.

Best regards,

So the message is:
Use either bookmarks or master documents. Well, that explains what I experienced.

Thanks for posting this.
