bpmn validation: participant warning persists
« on: June 08, 2009, 11:37:46 pm »
[Registered EA (Corporate Edition) 7.5 build 845 + MDG Technology for BPMN 1.3]

- Create a new project
- Add a business process model
- Add a BPMN 1.1 diagram (BPMN, not BPEL)
- Add a pool
- Validate the diagram with only "BPMN Rules" enabled. The following warning should appear: "... : Participant for a Pool must be defined"
- save current diagram
- Add a BPMN Participant Type to the diagram
- Edit the Pool's tagged values: set ParticipantRef to the Participant created in the previous step
- save current diagram
- Validate the diagram with only "BPMN Rules" enabled. --> The participant warning is still there

Is it a bug or am I missing something?

FYI: Support replied the following to me

"The BPMN add-in, which provides the model validation rules that you are executing, was aimed at BPMN 1.0. We haven't implemented model validation for BPMN 1.1 yet."

Hi Pascal,

I guess - without proof - that eliminates BPMN validation for the new high end editions of EA 7.5, since that's the version built into them.

Maybe there is a workaround...

What you might be able to do - I have not tried this at all, so use caution - is disable the 'native' BPMN for EA 7.5 and install the 'old' BPMN add-in from earlier versions of EA. You might have to go back to the "version 1.3" MDG Technology that used to be available for download. [Note that the version here refers to the MDG Technology for EA, not the version of BPMN. Any confusion is caused by the version numbers assigned when these things were developed; I have nothing to do with that.]

You can disable the BPMN that comes with EA 7.5 from the Settings | MDG Technologies dialog. You could then try to install the old version by following whatever directions are provided on the download page. Note that the add-in I am referring to is quite dated. It might use the obsolescent method of add-in installation. I have no idea whether or how this would affect performance.

It might also be possible to find the add-in file from an EA 7.1 installation if you've got an old kit floating around. This was "version 1.4" of the add-in (again using the Sparx application version). I believe it used the newer installation method. You would probably find the file in the standard location for MDG Technologies under the EA installation folder. I believe the documentation for this version was pretty sketchy, but it seemed to operation along the same lines as both the older one (mentioned above) and the EA 7.5 version. If you are familiar with either of those you should be OK. Once again, I have not tried this at all, so you are on your own.

If you try either or both of the above, please post back to say what happens.

David
No, you can't have it!
