Autosave - feature request

Well I got caught out today,
I left some changes unsaved in EA and came back from my meeting to find my PC had rebooted.

I checked the forum and the help,
and it appears that autosave does not exist.

Well I thought (duh) that in the 21^st century this would just happen™
a bit like hot water and sliced bread really.


OK, so how about it, a feature that preserves ALL changes made (up to the last key stroke) and offers to restore them after a failure.

You could try enabling the Auto Save Changes option under Tools | Options | Diagram | Behavior.

Most changes in EA are saved immediately by default, excluding changes to diagram layout.  Enabling the "Auto Save Changes" option should cause all changes to diagrams to be committed immediately without requiring an explicit "save" command.

It's not quite 'up to the last keystroke', but it's about as close as you can get at the moment.

You would have found this option with a search of the Help, but not through the Index. I have now put a number of index entries in to make it easier to find the facility. I have also mentioned it in the Save Changes topic.

The updated Help should be available in the product installer for the soon-to-be-released build 849.

does this setting have to be made for every diagram,
or does it apply to every diagram?

PS I tried the search, but my term was "autosave", not "auto save" - I could have tried harder.

PPS will these changes also appear on the website ?

The setting is a default for all diagrams.

The changes will eventually appear on the website. We are trying to streamline the process of updating the web help, but each utility we try seems to insert its own glitch.

Why do you ask if the changes will be in the web help? I ask because the .chm and .pdf versions of the Help for the latest release are also available from the website. Would one of those versions be as good?

I try to search the forum, and the website before I post messages
(even if, in this case I got it wrong).

It seems to me the website should always have the most up to date version of the help,
plus, through all the other resources available, I should have a better chance of hitting something that might help me.

To me the website should have the best information available,
and the best searching.

The setting is on the Diagram Behavior page under Tools | Options because this change primarily affects autosave of changes being made to diagrams.  Most other changes made in EA are immediately saved to the database by default.  The Auto Save Changes option is an application-level setting and applies only to changes made from your local PC.  This option will apply across all diagrams and repositories that you access from your EA installation.
