Element notes' bullets items & RTF generation

Hi,
I am a bit surprised not to find any previous post  concerning this subject  in any forum. So, sorry if I was not good enough to search correctly...

My problem is the following : when I use bullet points in Element notes, and then generate RTF documents from the packages that contains these elements, it seems that in the generated RTF these bullets are no more displayed since the RTF file begins to be quite "big".

More precisely : my RTF file size is 6Mo, and bullets are correctly displayed until the 32th page (over 169!) and then here what happens in the middle of an element note's display :

La validation implique :
•      xxxxxxx ;
yyyyyyy ;
zzzzzzzz ;

In the element's note, the "yyyyyy" and "zzzz" lines are "bulletted" exactly in the same way that "xxxxx" line is !
Every next "bulletted" lines in these document are then displayed without any bullet.

My EA version is 7.5.847, and I open my RTF file with word (will try this afternoon to open it with openOffice).

Any Idea ? thanks in advance for your help.

I suggest you first upgrade to 848.
That was sort of an emergency build mostly because of some serious issues with the RTF document generation.

unfortunately this does not fix the problem.
I have tried to open this RTF file with other editors, and results are... quite suprising !!
 - with WordPad : the "bullets display" problem magically disappears !!! unfortunately images disappears as well  . Nb : if I save this wordpad-opened file as an RTF, and then re-open it with word : bullets appears correctly !
 - with open-office : bullets are correctly displayed, but fields appears with their field names, not with their field values ! (maybe I forgot a display option in OO ?).

I know that RTF format is always a tricky point with text editors, but is there any RTF  text editor with which EA is "fully compatible"

Hi,

Maybe your workaround with Open Office seems the best viable way.
I am pretty sure you didn't miss any OO option, but forgot to check the 'Overwrite Document Fields' option in the 'Advanced' tab of EAs RTF Generator dialog.
The fields should show correctly when opening the document in OO.

Sparx should consider to build in an option to remember your settings in the RTF Generator dialog (maybe for other dialogs as well). I forget this all the time, and especially if you're generating documentation from large models, it's quite annoying, to have the need for an extra roundtrip all the time  .

The "Resource Documents" functionalidy does exactly this: remember the RTF generation dialogs settings for each type of document.

Find "Resource Documents" in the help.

I just had a response from the Sparx support.
It works perfectly by doing the following :

• check  "Optimize for Open Office" in the "Generate" tab of the RTF generation dialog
• open this file in OO, then save it in the word format

Then the bullets items are correctly displayed.

Too bad : this option is not associated with RTF generator patterns  :-/

However, they seem to want to investigate the problem further : the ticket is not closed. Waiting for their news ...

More funny   , I had other problems with word : some text restitution are sometimes "randomized"... I mean that word sometimes displays "olleH rdwo" instead of "Hello world".
I thinks that it may be related to the word version we use here (2003), but infortunately we have no choice. Anyway, results are hazardous : some of my colleagues have the randomization problem, some don't... and we have exactly the same configuration on our computers !!!
And generating RTF with the "Optimize for OpenOffice" resolves this point without any need of opening the RTF file with OO (opoening it with word is sufficient) !! ... where this is not sufficient for the bullets problematic.

I suspect the problem is not with word, but something to do with the EA RTF generator.

That's just a guess of course. But in my experience it has been me that has randomized the spelling in Word 2003, not Microsoft.

The 'randomized' problem was fixed in build 848 (I believe).

The 'Overwrite Document Fields' option used to be saved with the templates, but we also allowed it to be overwritten for a particular generation.

The 'Optimize for Open Office' serves the same purpose, including changing some metafile rendering behavior to suit the OO renderer.  This is saved for the current user instead of to the template on the basis that if you are using OO , you will probably do that regardless of the template being used.
