Version and sharepoint etc
« on: January 08, 2010, 08:34:27 pm »
Hi

We are using sharepoint with version control switched on. However EA is not version controlled as Sharepoint not setup to recongise as a file that it knows. Normally EA project will save to sharepoinjt but the date modified is not updated and no versions.

However yesterday I did a lot of work and saved it and EA also asked me whether to save and I indicated yes.

In sharepoint the file has not updated. The file must have been saved somewhere - anyone know what may have happened?

Hi,

first of all you have to know that EA saves to the .eap file without asking. Everything you do is automatically saved.
The only thing that EA asks confirmation for is the layout of the diagrams.

Other then that when I test on a local eap file the modified date follows nicely after I exit EA.

- Have you exited EA before checking the date modified of the file?
- Are you sure you are working on the file on the sharepoint, or are you working on a local copy (without knowing)?

Oh no I had the same thing happen! Basically you cannot host i.e. save a .EAP file in a SharePoint library as when you close the EA model your changes are lost.

The reason is that SharePoint does not support file formats that need to remain open while being updated. Examples are log files and database files such as MS Access & .eap files.

What happens is when you open the .eap file EA creates a second file with your workings. When you close the EA model SharePoint discards that second file (along with your changes).

I found this out in a presentation from a SharePoint guru Joel Oleson, you can view his blog here: http://www.sharepointjoel.com/default.aspx
