Open polls for other boards
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:50:03 pm »
Long have we waited for the ability to poll. Currently there is just the Bugs board where you can start polls. However, I think that at least the Suggestions board should be opened for polls. I don't know if it makes much sense on the other boards since we expect the bugs polls to influence bug correction and the suggestions board to influence new feature development.

Ping. Seems a vote doesn't push the thread on top. If you haven't voted you won't see the vote results. So please vote now.

Not very convincing. Just 7 opinions when there are thousands of users.

But b...

Only MY opinion counts...    ;)

Welcome to the silent majority.   I can't remember, but there's a big ratio between those who want something done and those who are actually prepared to do something about it...  That's why every written complaint is handled as though a large number of people had the same problem.

Just keep plugging away - the only thing that works is persistence...

Not really. The question is whether your opinion counts at Sparx. From their point of view: what is it worth? 7 out of some thousands? Maybe the poll itself as instrument is too new, but I doubt that. Likely the number of people that actually care is too small. Hmm. I don't care either...

Personally I would not overestimate the importance of this board to Sparx at all.
Relating the number of installations of EA instances worldwide to the people frequently posting here it should be rather clear that the forum only represents a small minority of those.
I believe most EA users work with the tool but never (or at least occasionally) show up here to make themselves heard.
Whatever you poll here is not very representative at all so the outcome of such polls is questionable and the meaning for Sparx is propably unclear.

Just my few cents.

Oliver

Actually, Oliver is right on the money with his few cents.  Although we do value the opinions of our customers, this forum is not our primary means of gathering that information or ultimately where our development efforts are expended.

In fact, the enabling of polls at all appears to have been done by mistake and I believe they will be disabled again in the near future.

My view is that I would much rather read what people have to say on a subject than just be told how many of them voted. If polls are going to become a substitute for debate then I don't like.

Absolutely agreed!  But, that having been said, I don't see much value in postings of the form:

Gets my vote!

Me Too!

Etc..

The current (accidentally enabled) mechanism that combines voting and the discussion seems to fit the bill... If you just want to support then you can do so, if you want to add a comment you can...

However, beginner pointed out that polls don't get an preferential treatment visibility-wise and soon drop out of sight due to the activity on the various boards so I'd support some mechanism for (at least temporarily raising its visibility.

And that is the point beginner was making on the value of the poll - it drops out of sight precisely because there is minimal activity on the poll and diverse activity everywhere else. People have moved on and are not interested in the poll. Elevating them in whatever form simply promotes the fact that seven out of 17, 600+ registered users have expressed three or four different preferences for a change. And those registered users are a subset of the 200,000+ licensed seats.
Best Regards, Roy

Roy,

In principle I agree, but the FACT is that between me logging in one day and me logging in just two days later, the poll could have swept of the first page.  There's just that much activity on the site.

Even I with my enthusiasm/masochism for this forum can't keep up.

So as a casual user, I don't know it's there...  Search (as we've often mentioned) is occasionally problematic.

I suspect, however, that IF Sparx were to make polling formally available, there'd be more voters!.  At present it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy...

As Simon, indicated (and I strongly suspected), it "sniuck in under the radar".  So I've (and I suspect others) have only been playing...

Besides, if you don't think there's any real utility for Sparx, why not enable it?  Just say we can vote as much as we like, Sparx may or may not take heed - just like the suggestions category (you still have to submit a formal request).  It would at least allow us users to get better measures of what our fellow users think.

I'd be interested to know what other means you have at your disposal to gather user feedback.
I've been using EA for quite a few years now, and the only feedback mechanism I've seen is this forum and the bug/change request reporting.

Perhaps their secret internal bug list?
