856 COpy diagram image to clipboard.
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:39:24 am »
In windows has anyone noticed that Diagram | Copy image
does not produce an image on the clipboard that can be pasted to MS Picture Manager.

Yet the picture can be pasted to Word.

I'm wondering if EA is not correctly creating the clipboard data for the image.

It may be worth checking what clipboard format that EA is configured to use. My guess is that it's set to Metafile, which Word will understand, but picture manager probably won't.

You can set the clipboard format to bitmap through Tools | Options | General | Clipboard.

So it is. Thankyou.

It is possible however to place several formats of an object on the windoes clipboard at the same time.
Thus the pasting application can use the first format it recognises.
This is very standard windows application behaviour

We are well aware of that.  However, doing so would mean that you can't control what format is used by other tools that support both bitmaps and metafiles.

It may not be an issue for you, but it certainly is for some of our users.

Of course, that leaves a feature request for having a third option 'both'.

Thanks

My understanding is that most tools take the "best" version off the clipboard that they can use. Eg they might fall back from HTML to RTL to plain text, or from metafile image to bitmap.

This was the behaviour I expected to see when I was pasting an EA generated image from the clipboard. Its up to the receiving application to choose which of the multiple formats it prefers.

I will add a bug/feature request in due course, but as always I like to get your and the community feedback to make it as accurate and useful as possible.

I can confirm that changing EA to bitmap allows the clipboard image created to be able to be pasted into Picture Manager, AND that the image is now the correct one.
