Enterprise Architect 8 not working Windows7 64bit
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:11:41 pm »
EA 8.0 Build 855 (trial) is not useable in Windows 7 64 bit.
I just downloaded the trial after discovering that my current version 7.5.850 doesn't display notes any more after switching to Windows 7.
After selecting the trial version to evaluate I get three times "Out of memory." Exception and then a message "Failed to create empty document". I already tried with compartibility mode but this also did't work.

v8 (Full) seems to work under Windows 7 64 bit for me.

I don't normally work in 64 bit as I don't quite have enough memory at present to make it worth while, but I have a copy for test purposes and it seems to work fine for me (as did all the Betas)

I have 4GB of memory. Do you have less?

Yes, I'm running in 2Gb.  Quiescent Windows 7 seems to take up 1.3Gb of memory - so you can see there's not much left for EA.  But as I said, it seems to work fine (if a little more slowly- although my quick testing didn't show it as too noticeable).

BTW: build 850 also worked fine under Windows 7 64bit.  I only upgraded my test system from 850 to check your assertion.

So I'd suspect your Windows 7.  My Windows 7 systems won't store System Restore points across a boot.  It's only on this one machine...  In your shoes, if I were able I'd check a clean install of Win764 and just EA to confirm your operational setup is suspect.

I cannot get EA 8 to start up on Windows 7 64bit. When I start it I get an empty dialog box with just an "OK" button and "Error" in the title, then nothing happens. I just installed the full version of EA 8.

Oh, and I have 8 GB of memory.

Michael and I spoke offline and he's of the view that there's a problem when the memory is 4Gb or greater.  (That's why I'm not affected)

You should submit a formal bug report giving your exact configuration so that Sparx can formally confirm/deny there are issues with 64bit.

I've previously run Sparx (750) on Windows Server 2008 R1 with 4Gb.

I reduced the memory to 2GB in my Laptop. This didn't solve the problem. So there must be some other issue causing the problem.
I set up a virtual machine with Windows 7 and 64 bit but have not installed EA so far to make further tests.

Has Sparx given any indication that this problem will be addressed? I opened a support ticket and the only response I got was "it should work". When I wrote back confirming that it does not work, I did not get a response. So that was useless.

The fact is EE does not start on my PC with Windows 7 64-bit and 8 GB of RAM. I just downloaded 858 and the installation failed with the empty dialog box.

If the installation is failing, please run the installer from the command line with the /log argument and send the resulting file to us for analysis. Eg:

> eainstaller.exe /log c:\eaInstall.log

An empty error box can sometimes mean that Windows has no more resource handles (eg shapes, windows etc) to hand out from the system wide pool. I'm not totally sure how resources are assigned in the WOW64 environment, but if you could send the following through to us we'll investigate:

1. A screenshot of task manager with the Handles, USER Objects and GDI Objects columns visible
2. A Process Monitor log of EA's startup until the error messagebox is displayed (download procmon from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx and set a filter for the process EA.exe).

Please mark anything you send through for my attention.
Best Regards,

Michael

In a recent, related thread, a user had problems running EA 8.0 on 64-bit Windows 7 with certain monitor types and screen resolutions... changing (reducing) resolution allowed EA to run...
