Diagrams in a mess
« on: November 25, 2010, 11:53:57 pm »
Hi All

Currently having problems with the fact that a lot of analysts are saving diagrams and then returning the next day to see that they are all jumbled.  Nobody is altering these diagrams behind their back so I am wondering if anybody else has this problem?

It is a shared repository that people are accessing from home and abroad.

Cheers

Bruce,

Which types of diagrams are you talking about, and what exactly has changed to them?

Usually these types of complaints resolve to:
- The user has forgotten to save his/her diagram. The result is that all the elements are still on the diagram, but everything that was added since the last save is stacked on the top left of the diagram
- The elements that are shown on the different diagrams have changed (added/removed attributes or operations). Ea will automatically adjust the size of the elements on the diagram to be able to show the new features, but this could mean that some classes now partially overlap.
- Each relation between two elements that is added will automatically be shown on each diagram where the two elements appear. If you open a diagram after a a lot of relations haven been added this might look like a spiderweb.

Hi Geert

Sorry for the lack of detail.

Users save their diagram (diagram is correctly layed out) and the next time they open the diagram (usually after several hours), the elements are randomly placed on the page.

No zoom has occurred (this was my first thought)and no additional relationships have been created.

Currently the issue has been reported on both requirements and activity diagrams.

No further details I am afraid.

That's very weird!
I think you better report it to Sparx support.
They will surely be able to help you.

This can also happen if users have different Tools | Options | Diagrams settings.
Can you show us a before and after example?

Are you using the WAN Optimizer in conjunction with an Oracle repository?
Best Regards,

Sorry, but wont be able to get before and after, as we have quite a few diagrams and there doesn't seem to be any pattern in what diagrams are affected.

We aren't using the WAN optimiser option on connection to the server.  Would that help?

There are quite some "coincidence" patterns where diagrams get messed up:
- EA killed before the diagram is saved
- Multiple persons working the same time at the same diagram (the last one saving 'wins')
- Importing XMI (which silently messes unsaved diagrams)
- Addins
