Slow startup
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:39:31 pm »
Hi,

We're running v8.0.861 (and have been for some time) but currently are experiencing some problems. When we try and start EA (and this is on different machines) we have the same strange situation.

Although the process appears to start (we can see it in the Task Manager's Processes list), we don't get any splash screen for about 20 minutes (it's actually 22.5 - but who's really counting), but then EA fires up without a problem.

We can try this a number of times, each time starting a process but it'll always take its time.

Is there anything that we can check for? Network connectivity perhaps as we're running on a wireless link but that doesn't have any other problems.

Oddly enough, in some cases, shutting the machine completely down and startup again allows EA to start normally.

What does EA do at startup?

Open to any thoughts... :-?

Martin

Martin,

Seems to me like EA is waiting for some kind of (system) resource to be released, or something like that.
You can eliminate the network by starting up a local eap file.
If that is taking the same amount of time then it doesn't have anything to do with the network.

Another thought, do you have any version control configured on the machine? Those are know to cause all kinds of delays.

Hi Geert,

Thanks for the reply. We're doing some investigations at the moment.

First off, this occurs when simply starting EA - without loading a project file. Although we use Subversion, our actual .eap file is locally stored.

I would agree that it's in some 'wait loop' - but that's one heck of a wait!

We've downloaded version 9 and that still shows the same issue.

However...just found that if you disconnect the machines from VPN then (almost) violá - EA starts immediately = witin 5 seconds. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Oddly enough on my machine - which has the same set up as the other ones, I can start EA straight away with or without VPN.

So, having found a 'sort-of' solution we'll stick with that, unless anyone else has knowledge about EA and its startup processes.

Thanks
Martin

Don't know if this is directly related but with the latest build Sparx introduced a bug with svn where you get timeouts when adding a new package to svn. They are aware of that but have no estimate for the solution. It could be that the timeout and the delay you experience have the same root.

Thanks for the heads-up, qwerty. :) We'll bear it in mind. There's definitely some delay going on and, although this was 'discovered' in v8, it may well be code that they're using for accessing SVN in v9.

As I've said, we have a work-around - not ideal - but it hasn't (yet) stopped us from working once we're in the app.
