I see there is a MDG Builder that has a Starter.

How useful...

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Starter MDG Example
« on: September 18, 2024, 08:26:21 pm »
Hi,

Does anyone have a starter MDG project that will allow me to tailor.  The user manual is actually quite clear on certain items but I feel like I'm going to be making the schoolboy errors the first time around.

I need to make a Network Design MDG that better reflects certain legacy use cases with Cisco / General LAN type use cases.  There are MDGs for Google/AWS/Azure but its missing certain telco use cases.

Thanks

Thanks but that is still a bit awkward and as I expected considering my current understanding.

1. Reporting is not really my approach to diagram generation.  I would want to select some sort of classification scheme/model/pattern which gets it projected over a view/model doing a a hierarchy search based on connectors and composition.  Then use the result set to populate a a block diagram based on the initial pattern.  Then sort/layout the block diagram.  E.g. I want all my actors here. I want all my business services here. Put all my functions here. All my components here.  Put Use Cases here.  Etc.

2. I would want sparx to just implement the plantuml script for sequence diagrams.  Its not even difficult. Doesnt change the core of the sequence diagram.

3. Documentation is my biggest bugbear. I'd want much better support for this. Preferably showing each document in the package hierarchy and linking where necessary.  If this could be backed off to sharepoint or some folder structure and kept in sync with the model structure - this would be amazing.

Generally, every requirement (at least 5) I've requested of Sparx they've implemented.  I provided a detailed breakdown of the requirement on how it could be practically be implemented which makes it more than just a one-liner.

Hi Guys,

I've been using Sparx for a good 15 years now but I'm needing to scale a few items.  I've never used prolaborate so I may need guidance.

1. I need to generate block diagrams showing capabilities and their composition from business services, business functions, etc, and ideally get these projected into a defined pattern.  My understanding is that other tools like LeanIX and BOCgroups tools can do this.  I'd prefer to use Sparx.

2. I want to have scripts generate sequence diagrams using a common script/input format for other tools.

3.1. I need to store documentation and catalog vendor roadmaps, generally 10 PDFs or 10 PPTX files.  Ideally they're cataloged and stored in the DB or synchronized to sharepoint.

3.2. I need to manage and organize interface specifications.  Ideally the documents themselves provided from vendors.

How do you achieve these? Do you use other tools?  I'll log these as feature requests for Sparx.

Thanks,

Bugs and Issues / Re: Query timeout expired

Likely a DB filesystem issue.  Cannot select all t_object as it hangs on DB level.

Ignore this comment for now.

Thanks

Bugs and Issues / Query timeout expired
« on: November 12, 2016, 01:08:08 am »
Hi,

Trying to connect to my EA database hosted on SQL Server 2008.  I'm getting Query Timout Expired when attempting to open a hosted model.

The database itself is in good order (cluster 16cpu, all in good shape, 9% busy, lots of memory).

Very odd - Everything was running fine.

How can I go about figuring out what is wrong with the db?  Running EA 12.1.1225.

Thanks,
-Timothy

Hi,

A BPMN 2.0 diagram has Gateway nodes which can be Exclusive, Complex, Parallel, etc.  How do I get that type using the interface?  For all Parallel & Decision Gateway types, when I query the Element I get the following values: Type is "Decision", the Subtype is "0", SterotypeEx: "0", ClassifierType: "", MetaType:"Gateway", Gentype:"<none>".

State StartStop differ on Psuedo type with 3/4 but this doesnt seem to be the case with Gateway elements.  I cannot differentiate Decision from Parallel using anything other than the name, which would be incorrect.

What is the correct way to get the gateway type of the element?

Thanks,
-Timothy

Fantastic.  Thank you!

Hi,

A state diagram has Initial and Final nodes. These nodes are differentiated by Psuedo state types.  How do I get that type using the interface?

An Initial element is an Element.  I can get the type which returns StateNode but I cannot differentiate Initial from Final using anything other than the name, which would be incorrect.

What is the correct way to get the psuedo type of the element?

Thanks,
-Timothy

Suggestions and Requests / Re: EA11 - Anything in the wishlist implemented?
« on: February 13, 2014, 12:31:06 am »
I asked for diagram themes about half a year ago.

In principle it doesn't go far enough to adjust the basic diagramming to compete with something stupid like BizAgi.

4 simple enhancements:

1. Rounded corners and connectors everywhere with auto routing
2. Connectors automatically snap to the middle of an edge of a component so that all connectors are neat with guide points.
3. Big Drop-shadows
4.

Comments on implementation:
- Its the right capability just not solving the problem.
- The default needs to be improved so that ease of use is improved on default installation.

I have two requirements:

1. Enhance the diagram to make diagramming like bizagi.  Really, this is my biggest competitor to getting it adopted as a corporate wide standard.

2. Create an easier way to export the information as a website.  Provide a basic mechanism to allow people to extend/enhance the website generated so I can add a comment system to pages.  I wrote a script that publishes the model as a website every hour.

I'll make this public if you wants it.

Some basic UI diagramming enhancements would get me to standardize the entire company's dev team (100+ engineers/developers/business analysts) on EA.

Alas, I don't believe any of my UI enhancement requests have even been acknowledged/prioritized.

I'm not even sure that the team have a consistent view on how to improve EA.

Each release seems to include a hap-hazard selection of stuff that makes no sense.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Diagram Filter - SQL/tagged values please

I have the same/similar needs.

More advanced diagrams would be fantastic as it allows you to present to an audience and quickly show different concerns in a visual manner.  I'd also like to be able to filter which components based on their participation in specific diagrams (activity, sequence, etc).  This allows me to take a large complex component diagram and show what a specific process affects.

I'd also like to filter based on connectors.

When I am in the "Diagram Filter" and click "New Filter" and move to the filter configuration, If you press "Help" and see ththe "Search On" documentation it shows how you can search for different types of structures.

I am unable to change my filter to anything other than "Element".  Anyone have comments on this?

Why can I define a Model Search on TagValues but I cannot use the same query on Diagram Filters?

When I use "Add Filter" in a Model Search I have full flexibility however I do not have this same flexibility in the Diagram Filter.   It seems as though Diagram Filter even uses the same "Add Filter" dialog except it is fixed to constrain "Element" types.

Model Search is exactly the capability I need (and I believe everyone else also needs it) however Diagram Filter is locked on Element?
