General Board / BPMN - Return values
« on: July 12, 2007, 05:15:03 pm »
Hi all,

As my team's modelling exercise has progressed, we have increasingly been a little stupmed as to the best way to model return values.

For instance, there may be a high-level activity labelled "Process Payment".  This activity may contain a number of sub-activties, which ultimately result in either "Payment Successful" or "Payment Failed" (see following image).

Admittely it's terribly simplistic, but does this seem reasonable?  I want to ensure that I can translate this model to code at some point, so I want to make sure I get things right from the start.

Thanks all. :)

General Board / BPMN - Abstraction level for swimlanes?
« on: July 12, 2007, 04:56:21 pm »
Hi all,

Yes, in true n00b fashion, I am hammering the msg board.  ;D

My team has just started on our first attempt at modelling a portion of system using swimlanes - it's been an interesting process to say the least.

From my (very) brief experience to this point, I get the feeling that at the highest level of abstraction, swimlanes are not necessarily appropriate - in fact they complicate the modelling significantly.  I've found that they're more useful when the granularity of the detail that applies to the activities is reasonably fine.

Is this a fair observation, or do the gurus out there suspect I have some fundamental error in my approach?

General Board / Re: BPMN - Adding lanes to a pool

Are you talking about this?

From the UML superstructure document

I searched how to do it too, and it doesn't seem possible in EA.

(btw, consider linking an image, it makes things much clearer ;) )

Yes, this is exactly what I was talking about.  Judging by the responses, I'm not totally stupid then.  I must say I am somewhat suprised though, given that virtually every BPMN introductory reference covers lanes and pools in this fashion.

I had a search of previous threads and it gave me some ideas, so I'll play around with them a bit more.

Thanks all.

General Board / BPMN - Adding lanes to a pool
« on: July 10, 2007, 05:00:22 pm »
Hello,

I'm somewhat of a novice to all this modelling stuff and the use of EA, so I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to offer some guidance.

In the BPMN overview on the OMG website, it shows an instance where there exists a pool with multiple lanes.  When I add a pool to a diagram in EA, I can't seem to figure out how to add lanes to the pool.

I've looked in the help doco but it seems very light in regards to BPMN.

Any help is appreciated - thanks guys.  :)
