General Board / Re: sd frame
« on: July 14, 2009, 08:10:26 pm »
As long as its not another sequence diagram it works fine. I used a class diagram (actually I only tried sequence then class) .
Thanks very much. Problem solved.  :D

General Board / sd frame
« on: July 13, 2009, 10:12:17 pm »
In my UML & Patterns book by Larsman he states that any sequence diagram can be surrounded with an sd frame (p 236). I cannot achieve this no matter what I do. Help has nothing on sd Frame.

In looking at frament (which is what the sd Frame looks like) in the help , there is an entry (Search on Frament) then select Behavioural Diagram Elements (Rank 19 in my search). I can see what I would like to achieve. One has "sd Communication Diagram Elements" and "sd Timing Diagram", among others. How can one add this to my sequence diagrams that are referenced in another. (The ref fragment works well) I need to create a sd frame.

I can see that it is possible, but can't see how to achieve it.  :'(

Maybe in the next version they will address this as it is part of the UML 2.0 standard.

In the mean time I can live with it.  ;)

Using the exposed interface on a class and then making it provided I get tyhe lollipop notation. If I use another on related class and make it required I get the socket nottion. I get something similar to what Craig Larsman has on Page 263 of his book. It is not the same however as I cannot connect the two.

To quote him

Lollipop notation indicates that Clock3 implements  and provides the Timer interface to clients.
Socket line notation. Window3 has a dependancy on the Timer interface when it collbaorates  with a clock3 object.

I could e-mail someone a copy of the image I scanned in which would make it clearer.

O n Page 263 of applying UML and Patterns  by Larman he describes a new interface realization called socket line nottion.

In class relationships (Toolbox) there is a relationship that looks exactly like this notation (tooltip = Assembly) but when I try and use it to connect two classes or a class and interface the resulting association is nothing like what the toolbox icon looks like.

How can one get this apear to as per the book?  :-/

Fantasic. I would never have though of that. I know you can drag other sequence diagrams to create ref fragments but this one is new to me.  :D

General Board / Basic Sequence Diagrams

I am studying Applying UML and Patterns 3rd Ed by Craig Larman.
I am having a few problems trying to get UML elements to appear as his book. I can get a fair distance but some things appear to thawt me.

For example on page 239 of his book he talks of adding an active object to a sequence diagram. I can't seem to see where this is to add. The description of this object is a lifeline box with vertical lines on the left and right hand side. Is this possible?

Tools | Options | Diagram | Behavior | Show Linked Items in Package.

Did that but it looked the same after (that option was not ticked)

Its not a big issue at this time.
Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

Thanks for all the good feedback.

Subject to Diagram Properties | Elements | Show Compartments | Package Contents.

I can see the package contents but not the linking. From what I have found the link is based on the name.

I am sure I have enough to work with now.  :)

EA looks like it will provide a lot more functionality than I antcipated.
What would be nice is a much smaller example than the all encompasing EAExample which took quite a while to generate its RTF document. Possibly something about 1/10 the size. Anyway that would be a nice to have.

Thanks again. 8-)

PS: One of the nicest forums I have ever used.

Other element types can be set as composite, in which case it will open the diagram that was first when you set it as composite.  (It will create one if there isn't one.)

Thanks. I have looked at the properties for EAExample->Project models -> Start Here -> Model Overview (Business Domain Model). I cannot see where it is set as composite?   :-/. I will play with this a bit more.

In anycase if I create an object, set to be composite, then I get a child composite object with same name. It looks as though its the name that provides the linkage. I can move it up and down the tree ok.

I am complete newbie with UML (got UML 2 for dummies) and also trying to learn ORM (with visio pro)

Anyway thats one mystery cleared up for me.  :)

I am very new to Ent. Arch.
I am looking at the Start here package, clicked on Model overview to see the various models available.

If I double click on one of the nested package - Business Domain Model, I can drill down (or across) to Business Domain package diagram much further up the tree.

I am not sure how one sets this behaviour or can view what linkages are in place.

I think this is a great idea but I have not idea how one implements and then edits this behaviour. I have had a look at the documentation and help but I can find what I am looking for. Probably do not know what the correct terminology is.

Just purchased version 2.5 of ZiCom Mentor.
When I try and configure it in EA 7.5 it just says

Invalid key. Please ensure you have entered the supplied details correctly and try again

The key is correct. I have just installed it !!??
