IDEA: Multiple workspaces
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:47:50 pm »
These days, twin-head systems are almost "de rigeur".  Some lucky designers here at Ripple have triple-head systems (not me...  :().

Because EA has only one Workspace (where  the diagrams reside) most of the monitor's screen real estate is effectively wasted.

Could some thought be given to allowing multiple workspaces (each with it's own set of diagrams)?.

An excellent idea!

I regularly work with two monitors - even at home. At my most recent client site many of the analysts and subject matter personnel (the business users) also work with two screens. Being able to split the EA desktop would provide considerable advantages.

Perhaps a good first step would be to allow docked window groups to be split off to a second screen. We could work on the main panel issues after that.

Just 0.02 CAD from the frozen wasteland.

I can undock windows and drag them onto my second screen and their positions are remembered for the next EA session. I don't know if all dual monitor drivers allow this though.

If I ever need to see two diagrams side by side, I open a second EA session on the second monitor. Not a perfect solution, but unless/until we bring in floating diagrams it's all we've got.

My foggy crystal ball see's that would be difficulties in having  more than one edittable diagram visible at once, even though the diagram tabs allow a context switch at the moment.

So here's a possible interim improvement suggestion.

In the main, we only want to be able to refer to "the other window" when working in a given diagram.  Given that a dockable window is capable of bing moed to the other monitor, how about a dockable "reference diagram" form that allows all normal actions bar changing the diagram?

Thoughts? Responses?

I like bruce's suggesstion...  Multiple EA's won't work for me because you get two sets of the other windows.  (and no, I don't like to use hiding windows (excpet on the notebook with its small screen)
