New forum - "Mark as read" doesn't redirect back
« on: February 18, 2008, 06:46:47 pm »
Hi, is it possible to set this?
Mark as read should navigate back to main page of the forum. I am used to this feature :-)

Good point!

Not only that, but the "Top 100" posters has dissappeared.  How the heck am I ever going to catch up with Thomas now? !!!

..and while I'm at it.  Where the ^%*^%* did this "Was I helpful" new age, SNAG, PC, gibberish come from???

... can hardly wait for Paolo's reaction...

bruce,
we're all on level "medium". So the question is now: how can  catch up with you?

Edit: Maybe we can vote for each other to come up again ;)

I no longer rant, it was becoming counter productive - see some recent posts of mine....

I just stick to the facts and let them speak for themselves...

The half star is nice. I wonder what we got that for...
No, you can't have it!

Did you notice the 2000 character limit? And that includes any quotes!

We'll have to abbreviate our acronyms! No time to rant at all.

Sigh...   :'(

I see that, not only has the top 100 disappeared, but so has the rating by number of posts.  All of a sudden, all the gurus are back to nothing.  And here I was looking forward to graduating to Senior before very long.

While the karma thing might seem more merit based, I have to say that, quite aside from the new agey flavor of it, I haven't seen it work very well on other sites I am on.  People fairly rarely reward good answers and when they do, it seems it is often the newbie being grateful for some simple answer, not having contributed a meaningful part to some toothy discussion and almost never for having originated a good question.

I mean, whose going to give Paolo karma points for reporting bugs?

And, how about a default in the profile that one always wants to be notified of replies to threads one has posted to?

Has anyone found a place to see one's rating other than the two and a half stars?

I used to have 5 red stars and now I have none :(

I'm sure the limit can be increased if it becomes an issue. Maybe it can be linked to the karma rating so that the more positive votes you get, the bigger the posts you're allowed to make...

I think some new users have felt a bit intimidated in the past from joining in a discussion with a bunch of 5-stars. We're hoping this change will help open up the discussions a bit.

Notification can stifle forums - it allows people to ignore all the other threads too easily. It's there if you want to use it, but I'm happy it isn't default.

I don't think that knowing a particular poster has been a big contributer is intimidating unless the posts themselves are intimidating.  Clearly, for someone just getting started in UML it can all seem a bit much, but I don't see that eliminating the categories is going to do anything ... after all, one can still see the post count.

And I wasn't suggesting that notification should be a universal default.  I just want to not have to check it on every thread I contribute to.  At least it now seems to remember it from prior posts.

I'll go with Thomas - either or both of them.

Neil, the two comments of mine you quoted were mostly in jest; certainly the one about 2000 characters...

As to keeping the star ratings, I suppose it's up to you. More on this later.

I agree with the good doctor though, it would be a pain to have to check the notify each time. I had the option turned on when I first joined, but over time I found turning it off preserved my sanity (which I've expended elsewhere, thank you).

As to intimidation... Really?

No. To "feel a bit intimidated" is a variety of shyness, and doesn't imply active intimidation on anyone's part. Apologies if it seemed like I was implying otherwise.

Anyway, it isn't the reason for the introduction of the karma system instead of the previous star ratings - that's simply because it's the YABB 2.2 default.

Understood Neil.

At least as far as it goes. My 'understanding' is that the two rating systems are independent. You can have karma ratings as well as the 'stars' we've become used to.

Send me an email sometime about this if you want. I think there's another angle that should be looked at.
