EA 5.0 beta : must uninstall v4.51 first
« on: May 11, 2005, 05:04:30 am »
I would like to beta test EA 5 but cannot install it on the same machine where v4.5 resides.

I tried using another forum tip just to rename the install directory, but that does not help.

Any suggestions?

I simply switched to 5.0 since I know from the past that Sparx Beta has fewer bugs than Microsofts official releases ;D

Although I've only recently come "on board" I agree wth Thomas' observation and today I did the same thing... ;D

However, it should still be the case that both versions should be able to co-exist on the same machine without having to "twiddle" under the covers... :(

I remeber a similar discussion when they changed 3.6 to 4.0. It was (and is?) possible to have both in parallel. Maybe you could search the posts.

Thomas,

I meant that that the installer should check for the pre-existence and then ask if I want to overwrite or add an additional installation. 8)  I shouldn't have to use any "secret handshakes", or be a friend of "the Godfather" to achieve this. ???

I would still prefer to run both versions on a single machine. That way I can continue working on my current project without risks, and at the same time try it out in the new beta.

No way I am going to take any risks with critical projects blowing up.

Still would be nice to peak into the future like everyone else.

By the by, how much is an upgrade going to cost?

If you have a valid license it's free.

Maybe Sparx could comment on the parallel use of 4.5 and 5.0 (I also noticed that 5.0 complains that 4.5 has to uninstalled ahead).

I would also like to get the answer to this.  I had no luck in what was described as renaming the install directory.  I am not sure what directory I am supposed to rename.

A side-by-side mode would sure be great... even if I do have to shake someone's hand or be someone's friend.

EA 5.0 (beta or not) is intended to replace previous versions of EA.

Please take note that EA 5.0 BETA is provided for evaluation and informational purposes as BETA software, and should not be used with production models or on production machines.

I'd assume that the machines that you want to run EA 5.0 beta side by side with EA 4.51 on would be production machines.  Hence it is reasonable not to allow side by side installations.  (Or require friendships and secret handshakes to do it. ;))

Probably wrong assumption?  TIP: When you speak or write the word "assume" - find a way to turn it into a non-assumption... ;D

IF Sparx already know I have to "go round the back, knock twice, twice (on the left door only) and ask for Joe..." to get both versions on the same machie, then the installer should do it for me!  ::)

Suggestively,

A 'beta' (IMHO) is not intended for full 'production' use - hence (unless Sparx has shares in Dell and an interest in PC sales) it is unreasonable to expect people to uninstall their working production versions in order to try a beta version of s/w.

It's perfectly valid to give an answer based on stated assumptions. Do you ever use pre-conditions in your modelling efforts?

For what it's worth, I think the EA installer is very good. Apart from pressing "I agree" on the licence agreement, it's clicking Next, next, next, next, next all down the line. No difficult questions, and the Next button is in the same place every time. It even seems to work if you re-install an old version over a new version.

Evil,

Yes, it is valid!  But it is better not to have to state any assumptions. :D

Pre-conditions are actually Assertions.  You assert the requirement that the pre-condition hold and under Design by Contract™ rules, if the pre-condition is violated, the client (caller) gets an exception.

Yes, you're right it's OK (so far as it goes).  In the view of a number of us, it doesn't go far enough!

If you want to have a smile, look at how it uses the same name for the before and after products (regardless of the actual names) when it asks you to uninstall the other version... :)
