showing compartments of stereotyped element
« on: August 08, 2006, 05:45:33 am »
(EA Build 790, Corporate edition)
In class diagrams, if I have an element stereotyped as <<entity>> for instance, then by default EA displays it as icon for entity. If I add attributes or operations to that class, the attribute and operation compartments are NOT displayed on the diagram, although hiding theese compartments is not cheked in the diagram's properties. I wasn't able to find any way to make them visible except saying to EA not to display stereotyped icons.
Am I missing something or this is feature? If element is displayed with stereotyped icon, then compartments(atributes and operations) can not be visible on a diagram?
Any suggestions?
Thanx!

Try disabling stereotype display in the diagram's properties. You will then see the rectangle notation with compartments.

thanks for the reply,

That works ofcourse, but the goal is to have stereotyped icons. I'm using it to create business models which are going to be viewed by managers, not only IS designers and programmers: icons are a very valuable means of communication with them. I don't see why not to show attributes and operations of a class displayed as stereotyped icon under that icon (as in compartments but without compartment frames drawn).

I'm not so sure about that, but AFAIK you can have either stereotype or rectangle/compartments. You might try EA's shape script in order to get better results (don't really know whether that can help :-/)

This is the way EA acts in these cases. I too have run across this while attempting to use stereotypes in business modelling. IMHO this is a defect, albeit not necessarily a bug.

Damir, I suggest you escallate this a bit via the feature request page. You can get there from the EA main menui via Help / On-line Resources / Request-a-Feature.

David
No, you can't have it!
