left/right scroll using a tilt-wheel mouse
« on: September 03, 2007, 12:43:11 pm »
Certainly not a top priority, but if would of course be nice if pressing the wheel of a tilt-wheel mouse left or right would scroll the canvas accordingly. Tilt-wheel mice are not THAT exotic and exist since at least >5 years. And they are extremely handy for diagramming if a program supports them in a clever way!

Another very common way to quickly and easily pan is by moving the mouse with the right mouse button pressed. Instead of bringing up a context dialog this grabs the paper or canvas, so-to-speak, and shifts it accordingly.

Either way is much quicker and less disruptive than having to move in the Pan & Zoom view (or the using the scrollbars)...

The behaviour you have described for the right mouse button is available using a centre button (or holding the mouse wheel down).  However, you can also change this (by checking Tools | Options | Diagram | Auto-pan with middle mouse button) to change into pan mode when the middle mouse button is clicked.

Try playing around with the option mentioned above and set it to whichever you find most intuitive.

I tried it and, well, have to admit I didn't like it.

Schemes where one controls the speed of panning instead of the panning-movement itself don't feel very natural (at least for me).

IMHO it is easier and feels much more natural to move something by "grabbing it" (i.e. pressing a mouse button and then moving while maintaining it pressed) and finally "dropping" it (i.e. releasing the mouse) when done. Controlling the speed of a movement by clicking and then moving farther from or closer to the original click-location is much less intuitive and precise.

I recall that Microsoft had built a similar scheme into some of its Programs a while ago (as far as I recall into the browser and into Word). Using it one was e.g. able to adjust the scrolling speed such that one could continuously read a longer text without interruption. But that required quite some training and and consequently never really took off, too.

Just my 2 cents of wisdom...

That's why there is the choice.  Disable the option and the middle button allows you to move something by "grabbing it" and finally "dropping" it when done.

Ah - now I got it! Now it works exactly as I like it - perfect!
