Feature Visibility in data flow diagram
« on: January 12, 2016, 09:31:38 pm »
Hi,

a newbie question: if I want to display properties/comments of an object in a data flow diagram, the setting "show notes" or "show attributes" does not have any effect. The appearence is not changed.

Are there any general settings which defeat this?

Thanks, Messie

You're asking to make a DFD not a DFD.  The shape script for a DFD draws DFD elements, not not-DFD elements.

You can
  • use a UML diagram type and draw DFDs with it
  • create your own DFD profile/MDG
  • add notes to the diagram and use the Note Link to display the element note or attribute you want to show on the diagram.

This sounds like a rather cryptic answer  ???

It's a tongue-twister, but makes perfect sense. If you change any standard notation, it's no longer what you say it is, it's something else; a hybrid notation.

I thought my suggested solutions are quite specific and to the point.

But to be honest, I would like Sparx to update the DFD notation to the elements listed here https://www.owasp.org/index.php/Application_Threat_Modeling

Normally it is how can I make Sparx's UML rendered Archimate, even less Archimate.  Asking to change a notation over forty years old was quite novel for this forum, I thought.

This really took me some moments to understand  ;)

You can
add notes to the diagram and use the Note Link to display the element note or attribute you want to show on the diagram.[/li][/list]
I Think, this will suit best for me. But, unfortunately, I don't get it work. I would expect to see the object's features like comments in the dialog of the note link but this stays empty.
So it behaves different as noted in the help.
Any ideas what I can do to make this work?

Thanks, Messie

Add a note, connect it to an element with a note link.  Right click on the note link.  You'll see Link note to element feature.  it's the second item down in EA12.1 (but YMWV).  The Feature Type drop box allows you to choose what to connect it to.

It definitely works for the element's note for the DFD.  Hard to say if the other things "should" work :-)
