How to make colours work for status ?

I have been trying to set up status colours for my use case packages; I use status on the packages to indicate once I have derived technical requirements from each package.

I have applied the colour and enabled it for all diagrams in the options/tools menu but it does not effect the rendering of packages or requirements at all ?

I'm not Ash, but Artifact isn't on the list because it can't have a shadow, and therefore can't have the status colour shown on the shadow.

Oh, and before you ask.  I don't know why artifacts can't have shadows.

If NOT, then can an Artifact have a shadow pretty please?

I'm looking at packages and use cases not artifacts? (although I'm not sure what you mean by artifact ?)

And I didn't overlook the Applies to dialog; I added a couple of custom status types (desirable / mandatory / requirements complete) and gave colours to them.

The reason I'm doing this is to easily view where I am up to in analyis (or more importantly how far I have to go!).

I now do it using report view; but obviously I loose any visual information doing this.

See the Deployment toolbox - you'll find Artifact there.

Double-check the checkboxes in the Applies to... dialog.  I thought I had mine set up, but I hadn't!  Once I'd ticked the Package box, it worked OK.  You DO realise that the colour ONLY applies to the little shadow to the right and bottom of the package?  (Apologies if you're Grandma and I'm teaching you to suck eggs...  )

However I have found the source of my problems.

The status colours can only be applied to one object type.

I was applying a couple of the status colours to requirements; and then applying some other ones to packages.

Now I realise that the 'applies to' is actually binding of the status/colour matches in the list to every selected object.

Problem solved. (I just select both requirements and packages!)

I'm not sure that what you've just said makes sense.

Each Status Type can have ONLY one colour but it can be applied to MANY Element types (unfortunately not to Connector types ).  
You are correct that you can apply some Status Types to some Element types and other Status Types to other Element types - its all in the application!

I was hoping to use this to highlight optional elements in my diagrams.
But have the impression that status colors do not show everywhere (e.g. stereotype images).
Is there another kind of graphical indication I can use to make optional elements (of various types) stand out?
Only thing I found up until now is to attach a constraint.

You can try Bookmarks which show a red triangle on top of the element.
