managing requirements - using the baseline feature
« on: April 25, 2008, 11:30:18 pm »
Hi,
I'm looking at several alternatives in the handling of requirements & the  necessity in managing & tracking change to the requirements as they move forward.

We are currently using EA  - and what a nice tool it is too :) for modeling, but not for requirements management. Has anyone had experience of using the baseline & change reporting feature in the corporate edition? What are the limitations (we currently use Svn & xmi export to share the EA models for concurrent use), what are the pitfalls. How scalable is it ?

For traceability & handling arbitrary requirements it really fits the bill, Just not sure about the above.

Hope someone can help - or point me to a resource that would help.

I've searched the boards, with nothing turning up on this matter.

Thanks,

Dave.

Hello Dave,

Have you tried using the main menu option: View |  Audit View?
You can set this on for tracking changes to the requirements and view the updates.

Have you upgraded to 7.1?  I do requirements management and I believe that this problem has gone away as the Audit trail enables me to track every change to a requirement and the baseline feature allows me to generate and compare baselines so that I can see changes between specific points in time/releases.

I have been versioning off the database as we do releases and was able to generate a baseline in a archived copy of the model and compare it to the current model.

Regards
Robert

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies, I understand from the documentation that baselining & audit are possible in the corporate edition. I have a number of questions that I hope you may be able to answer.

1) I understand that when the admin takes a baseline, the baseline is stored in the model - as an XMI of the model elements than have been selected - I presume that this has to be exported separately .

2) Thanks for the heads up on RaQuest, but doesn't look like it offers much more than what the corporate edition would allow me to do. Am I wrong ?

3) The Audit facility seems impractical (in the way we have deployed EA - using local repositories on the users local machine ) & synching via XMI with subversion. So the audit log would be logged to the users local .eap file & would have to be manually extracted & centralised by each user - Am I wrong ?

Thanks for your valuable time.
Ddave.

Hi Ddave,

The audit facility is enabled on a per model/file basis. If you are using local repositories, it is optional to have Auditing enabled on these.

In your central repository, if Auditing is enabled and XMI Import is checked, then changes caused by version control will be recorded. However I believe the changes will be marked as changed by the person using Version control on the central repository.

Auditing does allow Saving and Loading of Audit Logs, however this is designed for backup purposes and I would NOT recommend it for your situation, as I am sure there would be conflicts. If you send a feature request though, we could look at changing this.
