Managing Redundant/No longer used Elements
« on: September 10, 2013, 08:38:06 am »
Hi All,

I have done some searching and unable to find any topics on this subject.

We have several products, services and functions through discovery, robust debate and testing are either no longer required or are a subset of the agreed products, services and functions and will transform in the Business Architecture into other elements such as process, activities, etc...

My question is how do I manage the products, services and function elements that are no longer required. I do not want to delete them, just wondering if any one has any suggestions.

One thought was to create a package called recycle bin and just park them here and exclude the package from the nightly HTML export. Any thoughts would be great???

Regards,

I used to stereotype them <<obsolete>> and through the MDG the so stereotyped elements were painted yellow.

We add "DELETED_" as a suffix to elements we don't need anymore, and we move them to a "DELETED" folder.
We also record the data, user, the reason for the deletion and the related TFS workitem.

Then (in theory) after a few months the model administrator cleans up old "DELETED" items.

I'm not saying it is ideal, but it kind of works for us.

Hi,

I use some automation on my addin to take over the internal "delete" functionality.

It proceeds the following steps:
  • Set the element Status to "Deleted" (in my views it gets a RED border in the Status color)
  • Move the element into a so-called package "Trashbin"
  • (optional - if declared by configfile) open a dialogbox for revealing the usage of the element (used in Diagrams, attached connectors,...)

Additional, this "trashbin" is very helpful if you accidently remove an object by using the internal delete function. There is no longer need for complicated takeback or resync with external version control.

Only from within the trashbin it is possible to permanently delete an element.

Hi Qwerty, Geert, Stefan,

Thanks for the replies. I will have to investigate your options a bit further to understand how this may be implemented as I am using the baseline feature within EA for my packages.
