Links to another diagrams and elements
« on: July 23, 2004, 12:20:25 am »
It would be nice if EA coul make the elements, such as Use Cases, Actors etc to become links, not only to URL or file but also to other diagrams and to other elements. In this way, it would be easy to navigate through the model.

Hi,

this can be done in EA already.
First of all, you can set any element to be a Composite Element. This means that double clicking on it will not open its Properties dialog but open its child diagram instead (the top one in case there are many). In effect, it makes the element act like a package. This should help in most of the situations.
You can also place a hyperlink onto any diagram - just drag one diagram onto another and when asked, say that you wish to create a hyperlink. You can of course link this hyperlink to any element, e.g. a Use Case.
I am not sure what do you mean bt a hyperlink to another element other than a diagram. What would you use that for?

Thanx!
I'd really test it if I hadn't have the following problem: I had the EA 4.0 trial installed, then I installed the EA 4.1. But I had a bug with SCC integration, and then tried again to install the version 4.0. BUT  >:( it just doesn't work anymore...  :-[
When I can make it work, then I'll keep on testing the software...
but I have some questions:
1) If i define an element as a composite element, then isn't it possible to double-click and see the properties anymore?
2) Isn't it possible to make the elements to become hyperlinks? FOR EXEMPLE: I have an actor in my Use Case diagram and when I double-click it, the Sparx home page is opened...
Thanx!!

Hi,

no problem!

1) If you set an element as a Composite one, the double-click no longer opens the Properties window. You can of course still access the dialog via right-clicking the element and selecting Properties in the popup menu.
2) I am not sure. If you have an Actor that acts as a hyperlink then I suppose it is possible... just do not ask me how :-) Either way, you can create hyperlinks leading to any address just by right-clicking the diagram, selecting Insert Element > Hyperlink and filling in the target address.

Hope this helps!
