CVS support
« on: December 17, 2003, 01:51:17 am »
Hi,
support for other CVS would be great (not only the SCC). There may be quite a lot others who use such systems - especially the PHP developers.

I agree completely.  The SCC is kind of annoying to setup at times, and tends to be unstable (at least Igloo seems to have some problems).

Try CVSProxy http://www.pushok.com/soft_cvs_vsigloo.php?PHPSESSID=bae6cf41a1194dc14885063dece7d812 - it is more advanced and stable, IMHO.

Since EA is running on Linux it really would be an excellent idea to have CVS supported!

I would like to add a further vote for Subversion, now that 1.0 versions are available.  I find it much easier to live with than CVS or the other source-code control tools that I have used.

Cheers, Tony.

Native CVS support in EA would be a good argument for me to have when trying to convince the people in the software standards group of my organization. CVS is now our (mandatory) company standard version control system.

Open source SCC-to-CVS proxies (Igloo) are not 100% reliable (and not completely open source because the SCC is a Microsoft secret). Besides, SCC is not 1-to-1 compatible with CVS, so it would be nice if EA knew the CVS interface natively.

In short: Add my vote for native support of CVS in EA!

Add my voice to the throng. I'm a long-time CVS user and repository administrator. I've been keeping an eye on subversion (running an experimental subversion repository at home to gain experience with it)

If it had to be one or the other, I'd want subversion. CVS is stable and I'm far more comfortable with it, but features in subversion (like versioning subdirectories)  are valuable enough to abandon CVS real quick-like.

My $0.02 worth.

I'm using subversion in practice and I like it very much. Especially in conjunction with the tortoise interface you can't beat it :D I'm looking forward to use it for EA in the near future  :)

Sorry, Subversion fans, but that file version $Revision$ / $Id$ number carries too much meaning for me to dispose of it as I would have to for Subversion.

Pity that the Subversion developers have done away with what to my mind is an essential way of uniquely identifying an isolated file, together with a means of seeing at a glance whether it was likely there were significant changes between two version.

The "Subversion" approach only works if you always have access to the (same) repository.

However, this is not the place for "preference wars"!

Suffice it to say that CVS support will do just fine !! (and if there's a CVS->Subversion module available then great!)

denz97,
there's a thread about clear case (which obviously does work for EA :P) here. Just try a search...
