Import EA4BI into EA v14
« on: May 12, 2018, 12:58:58 am »
I was looking for a MDM modeling solution for one of my architects and found EA4BI. I can open the sample model -- which is exactly what I have been looking for -- but v14 doesn't seem to support the same import MDG extension as v13.5.

The instructions https://community.sparxsystems.com/tutorials/1126-getting-started-with-ea4bi explain how to import the .XML file, but v14 will only allow .MDZIP and .XMI files.  Am I missing something?  or do I need to start with the sample EA4BI model for each MDM project I have my colleague work on?

Thank you ...

Even within the sample project, the relevant elements do not show up in the toolbox and none of the stereotypes used in the diagrams are included in UML types .

Hi,

The import MDG option is a bit hidden in EA 14, but works fine. The easiest way is to enter MDG in the search box. Then the steps can be followed as described in https://community.sparxsystems.com/tutorials/1126-getting-started-with-ea4bi.

Thank you for responding Rudi.

I not following you on the first step. Where is the proper search box?

Thanks in advance... Mark

I guess he meant that down in the Start menu.

Hi Mark,

I meant the search box on the ribbon: next to the menu-item extend, there is small light bulb with an textbox having "Find Command..." as contents. Enter "MDG" (without quotes) as search term in that textbox and press enter. Then the menu-items having MDG as term will present themselves. Then select the option "Import MDG Technology" and follow the steps in the getting started document (https://community.sparxsystems.com/tutorials/1126-getting-started-with-ea4bi)

Rudi,
Thank you for being patient and helping out.

I am using EA v14. Your instructions seem to apply to v13.5.  There appears to be no "Extend" option any longer in v14.
To restate:  the only way I can see to import MDG in v14 is .MDZIP file or .xmi.
Your EA4BI is a .zip containing a .xml file.

Import an MDG Technology is a different function from importing an XMI.

To import an MDG technology, select the following from the ribbon.

Specialize > Technologies > Publish > Import UML Technology.

Thank you Rudi and Sparx,

Either way seems to work:
    1. Tiny search field on "Home" pulldown to the left of "Start" tab
    2. Specialize > Technologies > Publish > Import UML Technology

I had to select "Import to User" -- "Import to Model" didn't seem to work

The remaining steps I followed are:
1. In Model Wizard, I had to select the "Diagram" tab
2. "Select From" pull-down, select "My Perspectives"
3. Select "EA4BI"
3a.Check "Create Package"  not checking this didn't seem to work
4. Select desired diagram
4a.   Package and diagram are created
4b.  Toolbox contains the appropriate elements and stereotypes

Comments on the design of the product:
Finding  "Import MDG Technology and under "Specialize->PUBLISH" is not intuitive. It made more sense in v13.5 to have it under "Extend"

I am now finding joy in building MDM diagrams.

Thanks again,
Mark

This MDG technology product is WONDERFUL!   We needed BI and ETL modeling as well. Thanks Rudi
