v15.2 - "Resources ain't resources" (for allocation)
« on: September 09, 2021, 03:29:39 pm »
I've often alluded to that famous Castrol commercial where "Boss" tells "Sol"  "Sol, Oils ain't oils!"  meaning what you think you're seeing may not be what you are seeing.

We've started playing with Gantt views.  We added an element and assigned a resource. "Paolo"  (not Paolo Cantoni).  It showed up on the view just fine.

So silly me, I thought it's probably in t_resources.  Had a look, it's empty!  ::)  I know, it'll show up in Configure | Reference Data | Model Types | People | Resources  NADA! :o  So I added another resource in that dialog.

I then added a new element and tried to assign a resource - BOTH Paolo and the new resource could be selected.
Instead, I added a new resource in the allocation dialog "somename" and the Gantt view showed the allocation. Still only the one resource in t_resources.

SOOOOOO...  Where are these resources held in the repository (I suspect in multiple places)?

TIA,
Paolo

Using EA for MS Project? It's not oil, it's vapor.

No, it's about rendering a Gantt.  It seems you can't render an element on a Gantt without assigning a resource.  We have PMs creating (high-level) "schedules" with Visio - stand-alone pictures.  We want to get them to do the same in Sparx, so we can link the work packages to related items.

We need to know where these resources are so that if we need to export the "Schedule", we can import it somewhere else.

Paolo

PS: In typical EAUI, while Paolo and "new Resource" are to be found in the drop-down, "somename" is nowhere to be seen!

If you tell me the steps to create such a resource I'll have a look. For myself I only touch these EA gimmicks with pliers which is why I will not waste time finding the right clicks here :-/

Create a new package, add some new elements, then in Browser use Open Package as... Gant.  Select an element and then assign a resource.

Will get you started.

I've tested that export and import DOES appear to preserve the resource assignments.  Found them in t_object Resource!!!!

Paolo

[EDIT: I still can't see "somename" in any dropdowns, although it IS in t_objectresources!  Any ideas why?  What are the prerequisites for a resource to appear in the drop-down?  (For example, if the resource availability does not overlap?)]

[Edit2: "Paolo" is not in the dropdown, but "Paolo Cantoni" is!  Looks like the list of "resources" in the dropdown is taken from the union of the Resources and Authors.  However, resources that you add to a specific item (by hand) go into write-only memory!]
