BIAN experiences?
« on: January 11, 2022, 01:03:43 am »
Does anyone out there have experience of using the BIAN (Banking Industry Architecture Network) models? I have found their portal (https://bian.org/) but can't seem to find out where I can download an EA version of what they have. The portal, frustratingly, lets me download their full set of APIs, which is kind, but doesn't help me to get a BIG PICTURE of what there is.

I looked into it some time ago. Beyond the service landscape described in https://bian.org/servicelandscape-10-0-0/index.html and the APIs, I do not think there is anything else available but could be wrong.

What do you exactly mean with the big picture?

By the way it will be nice to have more detailed description of all the business objects described in https://bian.org/semantic-apis/

as far as I can see they have exported their whole model (obviously made in an inferiour tool), including ArchiMate and UML diagrams

Ideally, I'd like to start with the business concepts: what do they mean by "Account", and how does it relate to the idea of, for example,  Person/Customer/Owner.
Without that, I'm always struggling to understand any other other artifacts. I've tried - unsucessfully so far - to reverse-engineer these 'API definitions' for other kinds of industry model - they follow a predictable meta-model. But there's information missing about definitions and intentions, which the lower-level stuff just doesn't have.

I also found the same individual links that you did - where we can see definitions for each concept - but not the picture of how they relate to each other. From the diagrams in these definitions, it looks like these diagrams do exist, I just need to work out out how to get hold of them.
I'll re-post if I can find anything.

The relationships for https://bian.org/servicelandscape-10-0-0/object_21.html?object=43039 are shown both at the bottom of the page, Relationships section, and in the following diagrams https://bian.org/servicelandscape-10-0-0/views/view_51831.html and https://bian.org/servicelandscape-10-0-0/views/view_51813.html. The relationships in the diagrams are a subset of the relationships appearing in the Relationships section. For example, Account is aggregated by Ledger but Ledger does not seem to appear in those 2 diagrams. Furthermore, there does not seem to a diagram for Ledger.

As I paraphrased in another post...  https://sparxsystems.com/forums/smf/index.php/topic,46538.0.html
"There are lies, damned lies, and modelling diagrams!".

Users need to be alerted when a diagram doesn't give a full picture of the section of the model being viewed.

Thanks to @Modesto, but those are the very output pages which I'm having problems with. They are a bit like trying to understand a landscape by looking through the wrong end of a telescope. Sure, you can see everything, but in little tiny pieces. I'm sure the BIAN website has some big picture diagrams somewhere...

You are welcomed, I think Paolo's comment here is very appropriate.

I don't think the site gives you a complete picture, if you want to be generous you may want to think about the site as work in progress.

I once met an architect who used the term "markitecture" to refer to certain types of diagrams, this may be a good example.

P.S.: You can always try to contact BIAN.

"markitecture"
I'm going to steal that one; love it  ;D

It even sounds like a buzzword someone in the sales department would come up with
