EA10 doesn't lock a key for a system
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:27:12 pm »
Hallo,

my company has three floating licenses for EA10.
When we are at our working-place and we have an infranet connection, we can choose the license server and everything works fine.

But when we shot-down our laptops and we try to work from an other place (e.g. customers), the key doesn't work.

Under "Help" --> "Register and manege license key(s)..." I just found the options "Add key" and "Release key".

But for many purposes we have to "Lock a key".

Does anybody know where the problem is?

I thank you in advance

Elvys

Additional infos: We use Win7 (SP1)

I believe authentication of the floating key happens every time you start up EA.  If you start it up at a client site without access to your keystore, or server with the key service, which are back at your office, it won't work.   I don't think this is a bug, it's by design.

Hallo,

I found an email send to the employee who ordered EA10.

Here following text were written:
Quote
STEP 3: INSTALL THE SPARX SYSTEMS KEYSTORE SERVICE

To install the Sparx Systems Keystore Service:

a) Download the Sparx Systems Keystore Service executable file from:
http://www.sparxsystems.com/securedownloads/keystore/sparxkeystoreservice.exe

b) Run the sparxkeystoreservice.exe file to install the Keystore software.

The installer is password protected. When prompted, enter the following key into the Password field:

XXXXXXXXXX

NOTE: To avoid typing errors, it is recommended that you copy and paste the above password into the dialog rather than typing it manually.

c) Review the license agreement and the readme file, clicking on the Next key after each screen.

d) By default, the installation program installs the Keystore Service and the Keystore Manager on the local hard drive. You can install either component separately on other systems if required.

The installation uses a default configuration, which you can also change as required. You start and stop the Keystore Service using the Microsoft Windows Services Console.

e) Select the KeystoreManager.exe from your Windows Programs list, and create the connection to the keystore. Select "Link To" from the File menu, and select the "Sparx Keystore Server" option.

e-i) If both the Keystore Service and the Keystore Manager were installed on the same machine, enter "ssks:// localhost" into the Server Address.

e-ii) If the Keystore Manager is installed on a different machine to the Keystore Service, enter "ssks://" into the Server Address field followed by the name of the server hosting the Keystore Service. E.g. ssks://licenseserver1

NOTE: After entering the server address (and password if appropriate), click the "Test" button to confirm the server address is valid.

f) Select your key store from the list and Add your Enterprise Architect product registration keys (below) to the keystore.

For further information on these processes see the Sparx Systems Keystore Service Help, available through the Help menu option in the Keystore Manager, or as the keystore.chm file in your keystore installation directory. (If the installation directory is not on your local drive, copy the file there in order to open it.)

This was the solution  ;)

I thank you all for the time.

Best regards

Elvys

Can you explain a little further - are you saying you have successfully connected to the keystore service on your internal network from a remote external location?

Elvys,

there is another option, which allows a user to retain a key (on their device) and run EA elsewhere.

You can either change the length of time that a key is checked out to a user or disable auto-checkin.

From the help text:
When most people close Enterprise Architect they no longer require their license. Therefore there is little point in continuing to allocate the license to a user who is not actually using Enterprise Architect.

· On the Options dialog, you select the Auto checkin checkbox so that any license in the key store is automatically returned to the key store when the user closes Enterprise Architect. Click on the OK button to confirm your selection. When the user closes Enterprise Architect, the key is then available to the next user who wants to do some work in Enterprise Architect.

However, a laptop user, having closed Enterprise Architect, might still want to use the license off-site, with no access to the key store and therefore no way to request another key. While the laptop user can put their machine into standby or hibernate mode while leaving Enterprise Architect running, there is the risk that the laptop might have to be rebooted. Once Enterprise Architect restarts it will report the lack of a license - the license having been automatically checked in.

· To enable such users to have access to Enterprise Architect, you could deselect the Auto checkin checkbox for the keys in the key store. Click on the OK button to confirm your selection.
