BPMN - Adding lanes to a pool
« on: July 10, 2007, 05:00:22 pm »
Hello,

I'm somewhat of a novice to all this modelling stuff and the use of EA, so I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to offer some guidance.

In the BPMN overview on the OMG website, it shows an instance where there exists a pool with multiple lanes.  When I add a pool to a diagram in EA, I can't seem to figure out how to add lanes to the pool.

I've looked in the help doco but it seems very light in regards to BPMN.

Any help is appreciated - thanks guys.  :)

You mean: Nada. Entering BPMN returns NO results in the help.

I also currently start with this and would like to see someone answering this question.

Are you talking about this?

From the UML superstructure document

I searched how to do it too, and it doesn't seem possible in EA.

(btw, consider linking an image, it makes things much clearer ;) )

I'm not sure this is going to help a lot,  but there is some help on BPMN in EA,  but you have to go to the Add-ins menu to find it.  Choose BPMN from add-ins and then "Help" appears as one of the options on its submenu.

Regarding using lanes - this is possible, although I've found it easiest - from a usability perspective - just to add the lanes individually without the pool.   Then something definitely close to the image above is achievable.

PS Changing the lanes/pool to be vertical rather than horizontal is done via the "advanced" option from the right mouse-click menu when the pool or lane is selected.

Yes, this is exactly what I was talking about.  Judging by the responses, I'm not totally stupid then.  I must say I am somewhat suprised though, given that virtually every BPMN introductory reference covers lanes and pools in this fashion.

I had a search of previous threads and it gave me some ideas, so I'll play around with them a bit more.

Thanks all.

I would do this by creating a pool, and then placing multiple lanes inside.

Simon - I've tried this and while you it works, unless I've missed something, from a usability perspective it's not easy because the lanes inside the pool become difficult to select so that even getting them properly top aligned and the same width etc.. becomes problematic.
