Enterprise Architect Templates
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:28:09 pm »
I have been asked to produce a template within SPARX EA that a business analyst can use to capture functional requirements and generate documentation. Any idea how  I can create such templates????

I think you'll have to be a bit more specific as to what you want exaclty.
Do you want to create a standard model structure in which the analysts can capture the analyses?
Do you want to create a document template to generate information, or both, or something completely different?

Read about profile in the help. I guess the resource site at Sparx might have also some valuable information.

All the model templates are available in Help File. As a business analyst you typically need to work with Business Domain Model, Process Model, Formal Requirements , Non-Functional Model. EA Example files gives a better representation

I have recently built an AddIn that does this for a client. Basically, I have a model template saved as an xml file and referenced in the models.xml file so when the client is starting a new project they can add it using "Add Model using Wizard". This model contains document artifacts - such as Business Requirements - which are Word documents that are also created from a pre-defined template and have automatically inserted rtf files that are generated from the relevant models (eg Requirements Model, Use Case Model etc) that are in the newly added model/project.

The AddIn allows you to generated the rtf files (using the correct rtf template and output location) by selecting Generate from a submenu. It also has the ability to take snapshots of a diagram for later visual comparison. If there is interest in the wider community we may bundle this up and make it available.

FWIW, the current menu for the addin is:
Diagram Snapshots ->
 Current Diagram
 All Diagrams in Current Package
 Compare Diagram
 Manage Snapshots...
Process ->
 Find References
Documentation ->
 Generate Document Section
About...

Mark

Hi Mark:
How is your document generator working out? We are also very interested in generating a "Standard" BRD using templates from a number of different EA packages. We would really like to be able to mix "boiler-plate" text with RTF sections generated from different packages using different templates. Does your add-in handle this ?

Thanks for your help - Phillip

Yes, Phillip, it can do that.

I will create an installer and some rough instructions and then send a private message to you and B3ip if you would like to test it out for me.

Regards,
Mark.

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for the response especially I would like thanks to Mark for sharing his experience with us.

Friends the work, when assigned to me , had very few details hence I couldn't explain my requirement very clearly but later when project information started pouring in I realized that it is a similar kind of stuff which Mark did.The only difference was that I got an XMI Model and asked to design a document template which would be used to generate a RTF document if required.

Once again thanks to you all.

Regards,
Umang
