Reuse elements in different diagrams?
« on: November 06, 2008, 12:48:56 pm »
Hi,

I'm new at EA and would like to know if it is possible to reuse elements from one diagram in another.

For example, could you reuse (i.e. copy) an element from a DODAF OV-5 diagram in a BPMN diagram?

If yes, how could this be done? A quick reply would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Frank

Generally, elements don't live in diagrams. They live in packages, precisely because you can use them in different diagrams (or, indeed, no diagrams at all).

When you drag an element from the Toolbox into a diagram, and give it a name, you will see that the element appears in the Project Browser within the diagram's parent package. You can then open another diagram and drag the element from the Project Browser into that diagram. EA prompts you to select whether this is an instance of the original, a copy or a new child.

Have a look at the Help on dragging and dropping elements for full details.

There are a few combinations where EA might stop you and say "No, you really cannot put that there" but generally it's up to you what kinds of element you match up in a diagram. And the UML syntax.
Best Regards, Roy

That's the beauty of the tool and a core principle of OOP.
I'd say experiment a bit and see for yourself.

Yes, you can. ;)
